Moody's Rates Ripple's RLUSD: What It Means for XRP

A Major Credit Rating Milestone for RippleXRP+0.38%'s RLUSD
Ripple’s stablecoin, Ripple USDRLUSD+0.18%, has achieved a landmark milestone in institutional crypto adoption. Global credit rating agency Moody’s assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term deposit rating and a P-1 short-term rating, which is its highest score for short-term obligations.
Assigned on October 28, this investment-grade score covers RLUSD across two major blockchain networks: the XRP Ledger and EthereumETH+0.56%. For institutional risk managers, having a formal rating from a traditional agency provides a familiar framework to evaluate digital assets.
"More good news for RLUSD this week. Moody's Ratings has assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term rating and P-1 short-term rating, the highest possible short-term rating under its new stablecoin framework. RLUSD is the first stablecoin to have ever received an investment-grade rating." — Jack McDonald, Ripple SVP of Stablecoins
What Backs RLUSD's Investment-Grade Score?
Moody’s based its assessment on several core financial safeguards built into the stablecoin's operational structure:
- High-Quality Reserves: Holdings are primarily short-term U.S. government assets and cash stored at BNY (Bank of New York Mellon).
- Reserve Coverage Target: Standard Custody & Trust Company set a 103% reserve coverage target for the asset.
- Market Capitalization: RLUSD has reached a market value near $2.5 billion since launching in December 2024.
- Bankruptcy Protection: The legal framework under the GENIUS Act, effective January 2027, will protect required stablecoin reserves from issuer bankruptcy.
Ripple's Expanding Banking and Exchange Partnerships
The Moody's rating follows another key regulatory step. On October 26, Ripple secured final OCC approval to establish Ripple National Trust Bank.
This trust bank charter allows Ripple to manage RLUSD reserves directly and offer fiduciary custody services. However, it will not function as a consumer retail bank offering standard deposits or loans.
Meanwhile, major commercial platforms have quickly integrated RLUSD into their services:
- Robinhood: Partnered with Ripple to introduce RLUSD to its platform serving 28.6 million funded accounts.
- Coinbase: Added support for RLUSD across the XRP Ledger, Ethereum, and Base networks.
Does RLUSD's Success Help XRP Token Holders?
While RLUSD's growth strengthens Ripple's regulated payment business, community members often wonder: Will the growth of RLUSD directly benefit XRP holders?
It is important to note that RLUSD's expansion does not automatically mean a tenfold price increase for XRP. RLUSD is a pegged digital dollar, while XRP is a floating digital asset.
Instead, the potential opportunity for XRP centers on its role as a bridge asset for cross-border currency transfers.
Under a favorable market scenario, if institutional trading partners use RLUSD and XRP together to execute cross-currency settlements, deeper liquidity and higher transaction volume on the XRP Ledger could support demand for XRP.
Conversely, if financial institutions opt for direct stablecoin-to-stablecoin settlements without utilizing XRP as a bridge, or if broader market conditions trend downward, XRP may not capture significant monetary value from RLUSD's commercial success.
The Bottom Line
Ripple is building a major regulated stablecoin business backed by institutional credit ratings and traditional banking infrastructure.
Whether XRP token holders see direct upside will depend on real-world adoption of XRP as a settlement bridge, making its long-term connection to RLUSD's growth an evolving story for investors to monitor.
