XRP Ledger Prepares Bug Fixes for New Lending System

Fixing Code Before Official Launch
The XRP Ledger is patching its software code before launching a new feature. Independent network validators are currently voting on a package of bug fixes.
These fixes target issues in a proposed lending system designed by RippleXRP+1.76%. Interestingly, this lending feature is not active yet and remains locked for users.
How Network Voting Works
The XRP Ledger relies on 35 trusted default validator servers to agree on protocol updates. A proposed change requires approval from over 80% of these validators.
In practical terms, this means at least 29 validators must back an update. Furthermore, that support must hold continuously for two full weeks.
The bug-fix update, named fixCleanup3_4_0, reached exactly 29 votes recently. It is currently nine days into its required 14-day countdown.
If all 29 validators maintain their support, the code will activate around 09:34 UTC on October 23. However, if even one validator pulls support, the countdown resets.
Lending System Remains Pending
Passing these bug fixes will not immediately enable lending. The lending mechanism itself requires two separate amendments to pass first.
The main lending amendment currently holds only 19 votes. Meanwhile, the vault amendment, which manages deposited user funds, has 21 votes.
Because neither amendment has started its two-week countdown, the lending feature cannot go live until early November at the earliest.
How the Institutional Lending Model Works
Ripple has pitched this lending setup to payment companies and financial institutions since June. It helps companies manage liquidity while cross-border payments clear.
Under the plan, lenders deposit XRP or other supported tokens into network vaults. Loan brokers then distribute those funds for fixed terms.
Borrowers do not post upfront collateral for these loans. Instead, brokers evaluate borrower creditworthiness off-chain, taking on the credit risk management.
Other Key Bug Fixes Included
The fixCleanup3_4_0 patch resolves other network issues as well. Crucially, it closes a security loophole involving token creation.
Previously, certain accounts authorized only to destroy tokens could create new ones under rare edge cases. The update eliminates this loophole entirely.
Additionally, the patch revises how vaults handle fractional token rounding. It also updates rules for determining when a loan is past due or in default.
Past performance of digital assets is not an indication of future results. Cryptocurrency markets involve inherent risk and volatility, so readers should evaluate technical developments carefully.
