Standard Chartered Offers Direct Crypto Trading in UAE

Standard Chartered Brings Direct Crypto Trading to UAE Clients
Traditional banking and digital assets are coming closer together than ever before. In a major milestone for crypto adoption, global banking titan Standard Chartered has officially launched direct crypto trading for eligible wealthy clients in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Through this new service, eligible investors can buy and sell Bitcoin (BTCBTC-0.32%) and Ether (ETHETH-0.50%) directly using their existing bank accounts. It eliminates many of the complex steps previously required to get exposure to top digital assets.
This move makes Standard Chartered the very first international bank in the UAE to offer direct digital asset trading to its clients. It is also a global first for the London-headquartered lender, marking the first time it has provided direct cryptocurrency trading to wealthy retail clients in any of its global markets.
How the Closed-Loop Trading System Works
Normally, trading crypto requires users to set up accounts on external exchanges, manage complex wallet seed phrases, and transfer funds back and forth. Standard Chartered is streamlining this entire procedure by using what it calls a closed-loop model.
Under this system, the bank manages both custody and settlement completely in-house within its own financial ecosystem. Because everything stays inside the bank's secure framework, clients do not need to set up separate external crypto wallets or sign up for third-party trading accounts.
To make this happen, Standard Chartered connected its wealth and retail banking operations with its corporate and investment banking divisions. The trading mechanics are powered by Zodia Markets, an entity backed by the bank's innovation division, SC Ventures.
Regulation and Who Can Access the Service
Regulatory clarity plays a key role in this expansion. Standard Chartered confirmed that it has received full licensing approval from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), ensuring the trading platform adheres to local compliance standards.
At launch, access is specifically tailored to clients classified as professional investors. This ensures that high-net-worth individuals who understand market dynamics get seamless access first.
Standard Chartered's Growing Crypto Footprint
This launch is the latest step in Standard Chartered's steadily expanding digital asset strategy across global financial hubs. Here is a brief look at how their crypto offerings have progressed:
- U.K. Institutional Spot Trading: Launched spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether for institutional clients through its U.K. arm in July.
- UAE Institutional Expansion: Expanded institutional spot trading services to the UAE on September 3.
- Direct Affluent Client Trading: Unveiled direct bank account trading for high-net-worth investors in the UAE under VARA oversight.
- Existing Investment Products: Already offers eligible clients access to crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), structured products, and over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives.
The bank has shared plans to roll out this direct trading model to other key markets worldwide in the future, though specific launch dates have not been announced yet.
Why Traditional Bank Integration Matters
Having a major international lender offer direct Bitcoin and Ether trading right from regular bank accounts reflects a major shift in institutional trust. It provides high-net-worth investors with a familiar and regulated environment to enter the asset class without managing technical wallet storage themselves.
While institutional integration makes access much easier, digital assets remain subject to high market volatility and rapid price shifts. Investors should always consider market liquidity and macroeconomic factors when evaluating crypto assets.
Past performance of digital assets is not an indication of future performance. You can review current market conditions on the Bitkub BTC Market and Bitkub ETH Market.
