Hyperliquid Trader Losses $9M and Flips to 20x Tesla Bet

A Tough Stretch for a Major Trader
High-stakes derivative trading can lead to remarkable gains, but market swings can quickly turn profits into substantial drawdowns. A prominent trader on the decentralized exchange platform HyperliquidHYPE+0.63% experienced this reality firsthand over the past week.
The wallet address beginning with 0x30af recorded roughly $9.53 million in total losses over seven days, following a series of leveraged trades across multiple digital assets and equity derivatives. Over the past month, the wallet reflects a net decline of approximately $6.52 million.
How the $98 Million Bitcoin Position Unraveled
The series of events began with the trader holding a $98 million Bitcoin long position with 40x leverage. When trading with high leverage, even minor price moves against the entry point can result in forced liquidations or heavy realized losses.
According to onchain records, the trades unfolded in rapid succession:
- October 15: Closed a short position on Coreweave (CRWV), locking in a loss of about $1.58 million.
- October 16: Trimmed 1,188 BTCBTC+0.44% at an average price of $80,954 for a realized loss of $1.73 million, while also reducing an EthereumETH+0.26% long position for a $626,000 loss.
- October 17: The remaining Ethereum long position was fully liquidated at 21:35 UTC, bringing total ETH losses to approximately $1.08 million.
- October 18: Closed the rest of the 1,355.6 BTC long position between 16:17 and 21:12 UTC at an average price of $80,945, resulting in a final exit loss of $3.26 million.
The final Bitcoin exit occurred just before an upward price movement. Shortly after the exit, Bitcoin rose toward $82,700, approximately 2.2% higher than the exit price. Had the 1,355.6 BTC long position remained open, that price bounce would have represented roughly $2.4 million in recovered value.
Shifting Focus to $46 Million in Leveraged Stocks
Following the Bitcoin exit, the trader shifted strategies starting late on October 18. Using Hyperliquid's HIP-3 framework—which enables perpetual futures trading on equity markets around the clock—the wallet opened $46 million in leveraged stock and semiconductor index positions.
The new portfolio configuration consists of three primary assets:
- Tesla (TSLA): A long position of 96,522 units valued at $34.6 million using 20x isolated leverage, entered at $360.23 with a liquidation threshold near $350.74.
- Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM): A long position of 158,560 units valued at $7.6 million at 20x leverage, currently showing unrealized gains of about $265,000.
- Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X (SOXL): A long position of 38,530 units valued at $3.9 million at 10x leverage, currently showing unrealized gains of about $291,000.
Tesla Earnings Catalyst and Leverage Risk
The primary driver for this pivot appears to be Tesla's upcoming third-quarter earnings announcement scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, after market close. Financial earnings releases typically introduce substantial price volatility, creating trading opportunities alongside elevated liquidation risk.
With Tesla closing Friday at $354.72 and mark prices near $358, the trader's entry price of $360.23 leaves little room for adverse price movements. A downside shift of slightly over 2% from current marks could trigger the estimated $350.74 liquidation price, effectively closing the $34.6 million position.
The wallet backs its combined $46 million exposure with approximately $2.83 million in remaining account equity. While high leverage increases buying power, it proportionately increases vulnerability to standard market swings. Leveraged derivative trading carries substantial risk, and positions can be liquidated quickly during unpredictable announcements.
Historical Wallet Performance Context
Despite the severe recent losses, the overall account history remains positive over a longer timeframe. On September 26, the trader successfully withdrew $9,999,999 from the venue.
Across more than $1.18 billion in total cumulative trading volume, the wallet retains an all-time net profit of approximately $2.18 million.
