Deutsche Bank Eyes Asia Crypto Custody Expansion by 2027

Deutsche Bank Prepares for Crypto Custody Launch
Deutsche Bank is taking a significant step into the digital asset space. The German banking giant plans to roll out its crypto custody service in Germany within just a few weeks.
The expansion will not stop in Europe. Speaking with Reuters, the bank's corporate bank co-head confirmed plans to bring the custody service to Asia in 2027.
This move gives corporate and institutional clients a way to hold digital assets through an established global bank without managing technical security themselves.
Supported Assets and Core Features
When the platform goes live, it will initially support five main digital assets:
- Bitcoin (BTCBTC+1.31%)
- Ether (ETHETH+0.80%)
- USDCUSDC+0.09% (USD Coin)
- EURC (Euro Coin)
- EURAU
Deutsche Bank will directly handle the technology required to protect these assets, including managing clients' wallets and private keys.
Beyond basic holding services, the bank plans to offer stablecoin conversion, tokenized deposits, and assistance with issuing digital bonds and blockchain securities.
Regulatory Clearances and Revenue Targets
Regulators in Europe have already granted key approvals. On October 12, Deutsche Bank received authorization from BaFin, Germany's financial regulator, under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
While the German launch remains subject to final regulatory steps, the bank is actively moving forward. Deutsche Bank is working with crypto partners Bitpanda and Taurus to build its custody offerings.
Bank co-head Podobnik explained that this crypto roadmap fits into a larger goal. The corporate bank aims for roughly 8% compound annual revenue growth from 2025 to 2028.
With this rollout, Deutsche Bank joins traditional rivals like Standard Chartered and BBVA, which are also expanding their custody capabilities for institutional clients.
Key Highlights Across the Crypto Landscape
The banking announcement comes alongside several notable shifts in the broader crypto and stablecoin markets:
- Stablecoin Payments Surge: Although overall stablecoin growth has slowed, transaction volume jumped 45% as Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe expanded crypto-to-cash integrations.
- Regulatory Discussions: Public issuers such as Broadcom and Verizon voiced objections regarding the SEC tokenized stock framework for OKX-ICE listings.
- Tax Updates in Europe: Latvia is planning tax law updates, preparing for potential crypto tax payments by 2027.
- Security and Audits: A report from Hacken highlighted that Q3 crypto hacks totaled $1.18 billion, cautioning investors that standard audits do not guarantee total safety.
- Industry Enforcement: Exchanges Binance and Coinbase supported a West Africa scam investigation that flagged $11 million in illicit funds.
- Circle Market Competition: Circle continues to defend USDC's economic structure as competing stablecoin issuers offer higher revenue shares to partners.
Market Analysis and Yield Trends
Analyst views on Bitcoin's short-term outlook remain divided due to changing inflation data.
Some market commentators suggest Bitcoin could reach $100,000 by year-end if institutional ETF inflows stay strong and inflation pressures ease. Conversely, if inflation rises or market liquidity tightens, prices could consolidate lower instead.
Meanwhile, real-world asset (RWA) research shows that credit-backed stablecoins are earning 5% to 7% yields from real-world loans, with projections suggesting the market could grow to $4 billion within three years.
