Bored Apes Jump to Solana with New Mudwater Card Game

Yuga Labs has officially launched Mudwater, a brand-new trading card game featuring both physical and digital cards on the SolanaSOL+0.70% blockchain. Interestingly, the flagship Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection itself remains safely housed on EthereumETH+0.50%.
This move brings one of Ethereum's most famous brands directly into the Solana ecosystem, giving existing NFT owners special early access to collectible packs.
Who Gets First Access to Mudwater Packs?
To kick off the launch, Yuga Labs rewarded its loyal community members with exclusive claims before opening cards up to the general market.
- Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) holders: Each NFT unlocks 10 packs.
- Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) holders: Each NFT unlocks 2 packs.
To make claiming seamless, Yuga airdropped a special item called a Totem to every BAYC and MAYC token holder.
This Totem uses ERC-6551, an innovative Ethereum standard that essentially gives an NFT its own crypto wallet. Think of it like giving your NFT its own digital backpack to hold items, which holders need to claim their packs.
The Math Behind Mudwater: Cards, Packs, and Boxes
The supply for Mudwater is strictly capped. Here is how the total numbers break down across the entire collection:
- Total Box Supply: 10,000 sealed boxes
- Packs Per Box: 24 booster packs
- Cards Per Pack: 10 individual cards
- Total Pack Supply: 240,000 packs
- Total Card Supply: 2.4 million cards
Because Bored Ape owners can claim 100,000 of those packs, owners of just 10,000 main NFTs hold access to roughly 42% of the entire set before open trading sets public prices.
What Makes the Mudwater Game and Cards Unique?
The team describes Mudwater as a tabletop game born in the Florida Everglades. On social media, the Bored Ape team shared the game's atmospheric backstory:
Mudwater is an old game played deep in the Everglades. Instead of dice in alleys, we play Mudwater on the docks. The game is simple, but the skill ceiling is high. And we play for keeps.
The complete card set spans 120 unique pieces of BAYC artwork, featuring physical and digital formats as well as special foil versions.
At the very top of the rarity tier sit eight ultra-rare cards. These are serialized 1/1 'cracked-ice' cards, meaning only one single copy of each exists in the world. BAYC refers to these rare collectibles as the true 'grails' of the set.
Trading, Market Upgrades, and Wider Crypto Context
Mudwater items are already appearing on secondary secondary marketplaces like OpenSea, where users trade Totems, unopened packs, and individual cards. In later phases, Yuga plans to let collectors combine and upgrade single packs into full sealed boxes and cases.
The timing of this release comes during a pivotal moment for digital collectibles:
- In June, the general NFT market cap dropped toward record lows alongside broader crypto market pullbacks.
- High-profile NFT purchases faced scrutiny, with Blockstream CEO Adam Back publicly describing Justin Bieber's famous $1.3 million Bored Ape purchase as essentially worthless.
- Despite general NFT cooling, physical and tokenized trading card collectibles actually grew during the second quarter while other sectors contracted.
Note: Past digital asset performance or market cap trends do not guarantee future performance.
Security Precautions and the Cross-Chain Strategy
As secondary market dynamics shift—highlighted by recent platform changes like NFT marketplace Blur shutting down its website—security remains a top priority.
BAYC specifically warned NFT owners to double-check every claim link through official channels before connecting wallets. Yuga Labs understands security risks well, having previously led a successful white-hat rescue operation when a protocol bug threatened community assets.
Ultimately, Mudwater serves as a major test to see if top-tier Ethereum brands can tap into new liquidity and user bases on rival blockchains like Solana. If successful, more blue-chip projects may choose to launch cross-chain experiences rather than staying loyal to a single network.
