Canton Enters South Korea as Meritz Eyes Tokenized Deals

A Major Step for Institutional Blockchain in Asia
Wall Street's interest in institutional blockchain technology is expanding further into Asia. On October 15, 2026, the Canton Foundation announced a major partnership with South Korea's Meritz Securities.
The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Their primary goal is to explore how traditional South Korean financial assets can be converted into digital tokens.
By doing this, they plan to connect domestic capital markets with global institutional networks. They are also examining how digital representations of high-quality debt instruments can be used as cross-border collateral.
Key Focus Areas of the Partnership
Tokenization involves creating a digital representation of a real-world asset on a blockchain. This partnership focuses on three primary objectives:
- Converting domestic financial assets into digital tokens under South Korea's evolving regulatory framework.
- Testing Canton's privacy-focused blockchain infrastructure for secure institutional financial transactions.
- Exploring international uses for tokenized sovereign-grade debt as institutional collateral.
In traditional finance, government bonds and high-quality liquid assets are heavily used as collateral to secure transactions.
Tokenizing these real-world assets (RWAs) allows institutions to move and coordinate collateral across different financial platforms with greater speed.
However, both parties emphasized that these initiatives are exploratory. They do not represent completed commercial products or operational transactions yet.
Meet the Organizations Behind the Deal
The Canton NetworkCC-6.39% was built by financial software firm Digital Asset. It operates as a public, privacy-enabled blockchain designed specifically to meet strict institutional requirements.
Canton's broader ecosystem already includes more than 1,000 participating institutions, supported by 62 major organizations that act as Super Validators.
Meritz Securities brings heavy financial backing to the agreement. Founded in 1973, it is one of South Korea's most established investment firms.
As of June 2026, Meritz reported 8.35 trillion won in standalone shareholders' equity, ranking fourth in South Korea. The firm manages between 65 trillion and 73 trillion won in assets, which equals roughly $48.3 billion to $54.3 billion.
"Our collaboration with the Canton Foundation lays the groundwork for exploring how Korea's capital markets can be linked with global digital asset infrastructure," said Byungha Kang, managing director of Meritz Securities' Strategic Planning Unit.
Growing Momentum for Canton
This partnership follows another key development on the Canton Network. Earlier in the week, major institutional players completed a privately negotiated total return swap on Canton using a tokenized benchmark.
That deal involved prominent firms including S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko, Derivnex, DRW, and Marex.
Unlike that executed trade, the agreement with Meritz outlines potential framework applications. Its success will depend on South Korea's regulatory decisions and institutional adoption.
