Why CoreWeave Is Facing Major Debt Pressure
CoreWeave Stock Drops Under Growing Debt Concerns
CoreWeave (CRWV) stock fell by more than a third in October. Investors are growing cautious about roughly $52 billion in debt taken on to build artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
This selloff happened even though the company doubled its quarterly revenue. On October 14, CoreWeave stock experienced a sharp 15% single-day fall, marking its steepest one-day drop since February.
Overall, the CRWV share price is down nearly 40% over the past month. Remember that past operational performance or past price movements do not guarantee future results.
From EthereumETH-1.99% Mining Roots to AI Computing Giant
CoreWeave did not start out in the AI industry. The company was founded in 2017 as Atlantic Crypto.
Back then, it focused on mining Ethereum (ETH) using graphics processing units (GPUs). Think of it like buying high-powered computers for one task, then finding a bigger market for them later.
In 2019, the company renamed itself CoreWeave. It repurposed its GPU hardware to rent out specialized computing power to external business clients.
Strong Revenue Boom vs. High Borrowing Costs
At first glance, CoreWeave is growing very rapidly. The firm booked about $2.5 billion in second-quarter revenue, which represents a massive 112% increase year-over-year.
However, debt markets are demanding much higher interest rates to lend money to the firm. CoreWeave's unsecured bonds now yield around 15%.
At the same time, its credit default swap spreads passed 11%. These financial contracts act like insurance policies against default. High spreads show that bond investors see increased risk.
How Nvidia Fits Into the Equation
Nvidia plays a massive role in CoreWeave's business model. Their relationship spans three main connections:
- Nvidia supplies the high-end GPU chips CoreWeave relies on.
- Nvidia owns approximately 9% of CoreWeave's equity.
- Nvidia committed to buy up to $6.3 billion of unused computing capacity if other customers do not.
On October 15, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed these financing concerns directly. He clarified that CoreWeave does not require a financial backstop from the chip manufacturer.
Their cost of capital is actually decreasing.
Huang spoke just one day after CoreWeave stock experienced its 15% single-day drop.
Crypto Connections and Sector-Wide Pressure
CoreWeave maintains clear links to the cryptocurrency sector. It leases facility space from Core Scientific (CORZ), a bitcoinBTC-1.06% miner that is shifting its business toward AI hosting.
In October 2025, shareholders at Core Scientific blocked a $9 billion takeover offer from CoreWeave.
Meanwhile, other GPU-rental providers known as neoclouds are under pressure. CNBC reports that competitors like Nebius and IREN have both dropped at least 30% this month alongside CoreWeave.
What Happens Next for the AI Infrastructure Market?
CoreWeave's financial outcome could set the tone for the entire AI and crypto infrastructure sector. If CoreWeave struggles to refinance its debt at favorable rates, borrowing costs could rise for everyone.
This includes bitcoin mining companies currently converting their facilities into AI hosting centers. Investors will monitor debt markets closely to see how these capital-intensive AI buildouts unfold.
