Traders Head to Bitcoin as Altcoins Slide and ETF Flows Wobble

Why Are Crypto Traders Moving Back to Bitcoin?
Have you noticed the crypto market feeling a bit unpredictable lately? You are not alone. Crypto traders are shifting their attention back to Bitcoin (BTCBTC-1.84%) as smaller digital assets struggle.
Bitcoin’s market dominance measures its share of the total digital asset market value. On Wednesday, that figure reached 60%, marking its highest level since May. It has remained near that mark ever since.
When market dominance rises, it signals a clear trend. Investors are choosing the largest and most established cryptocurrency over riskier alternative coins, known as altcoins.
How Are Prices Performing Across the Crypto Market?
Even though Bitcoin is taking up a bigger piece of the market, its price action remains relatively quiet.
Bitcoin briefly climbed above $84,000 on Wednesday. However, it gave up those gains and slipped below $82,000 on Thursday.
On a seven-day timeline, major tokens like Bitcoin, Ether (ETHETH-2.40%), XRPXRP-1.84%, and SolanaSOL-1.93% stayed mostly sideways or slightly positive. Zcash (ZEC) stood out as a major gainer, rising more than 10%.
Smaller tokens and specific sectors experienced much sharper declines over the week:
- The CoinDesk Memecoin Index dropped over 5%.
- The CoinDesk Computing Select Index fell 3.5%.
- The CoinDesk DeFi Select Index lost 2.5%.
Past performance of digital assets is not an indication of future results. Digital asset markets are volatile, and prices can fluctuate quickly.
What Experts Say About the Current Market Drivers
Why are markets moving sideways? Market analysts point out that crypto is currently searching for a fresh catalyst to drive the next big move.
Joel Kruger, a market strategist at LMAX Group, noted that crypto's earlier momentum has slowed down. Today, digital asset prices are aligning more closely with global equity markets.
Kruger explained that global macroeconomic factors remain the dominant force in the market. He added that Bitcoin's fixed supply and scarcity could help it handle potential stock market volatility.
Meanwhile, exchange executives urge investors to remain cautious regarding spot ETF activity.
Vikram Subburaj, CEO of exchange platform Giottus, pointed out that spot Bitcoin ETFs still lack steady institutional buying. While Bitcoin ETFs brought in $1.08 billion over three days, overall daily flows remain uneven.
Flows remain volatile, and sustained inflows are needed to confirm a stronger recovery. Investors should avoid chasing short-term rallies. Consider staggered entries, maintain measured position sizes and monitor ETF flows and Fed signals before increasing exposure.
Subburaj emphasized that while buying gradually can help manage risk, traders should always keep position sizes controlled due to sudden price swings.

Technical Indicators and Key Events to Watch
Traders looking at chart patterns are paying close attention to technical signals across major tokens.
On the XRP daily chart, the asset is trading below the Ichimoku cloud, a technical tool used to identify momentum and support levels. Staying below the cloud indicates potential bearish momentum unless prices rebound.
Elsewhere, Solana launched its largest network upgrade since 2020 to boost performance. Meanwhile, an XRP Ledger bug fix was pushed to November due to a brief dip in validator support.
All eyes are now turned toward the Federal Reserve. The US central bank meets next week to decide on interest rate policy, an event that frequently impacts both traditional and crypto markets.
