Network School Acquires Farcaster from Neynar

Big changes are coming to the decentralized social media space. Balaji Srinivasan's initiative, Network School, has officially acquired Farcaster from developer platform Neynar.
Along with this ownership transfer, the team announced a major operational update. Active users will now need to sign a social smart contract to continue posting and interacting on the platform.
What Is the New Social Smart Contract?
In the world of blockchain, a smart contract is code that executes automatically when set rules are met. A social smart contract applies this mechanism to community standards and user agreements.
Under this new policy, users must sign the agreement using their digital wallet or cryptographic identity. This explicitly confirms that they agree to abide by the platform's social and community rules.
If a user chooses not to sign the contract, they will not be banned completely. Instead, their account privileges will drop to read-only access.
What Does Read-Only Access Mean?
For users who decide against signing the digital agreement, access to the platform becomes limited:
- Reading Content: Users can still view posts, read discussions, and follow public feeds.
- Restricted Actions: Users cannot publish new posts, reply, or interact with other members on-chain.
Who Are the Key Players Behind the Deal?
Balaji Srinivasan and Network School
Balaji Srinivasan is a well-known investor, entrepreneur, and former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Coinbase. He also served as a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
He launched Network School as an educational and community platform. It explores how online communities can form transparently governed digital networks.
Neynar and Farcaster
Farcaster is a popular decentralized social network protocol. It lets users own their social data and identity across different applications.
Neynar has played a central role in building developer tools, APIs, and infrastructure for the Farcaster ecosystem. With this acquisition, oversight of Farcaster shifts to Network School.
Why This Matters for Decentralized Social Media
Decentralized social networks strive to balance open access with effective moderation. Traditional Web2 sites use centralized teams to manage user behavior.
By implementing a social smart contract, Network School is testing a new way to establish community standards on-chain. It asks users to actively consent to shared platform norms before participating.
