Luxor Technology Raises $16M to Scale AI Compute Push

A Major Step Into Artificial Intelligence
Bitcoin mining company Luxor Technology has raised $16 million in strategic funding. The Seattle-based infrastructure firm plans to use the new capital to scale up its push into artificial intelligence computing power.
CMT Digital, the venture arm of Chicago-based CMT Group, led the investment round. Key hardware manufacturers Canaan and MicroBT also joined the round, along with Halo, Steelhead, and strategic angel investors.
Building on Existing Mining Infrastructure
The strategic round combines both primary and secondary capital. Luxor describes each investor as an operating partner deeply integrated into the compute supply chain across hardware, capital, and power generation.
This capital raise follows the September launch of Luxor AI. That division expands the core energy, hardware, software, and trading stack Luxor originally built for Bitcoin mining into high-performance AI workloads.
Proven Track Record in Crypto Infrastructure
Luxor brings extensive operational experience to its AI initiative across several key metrics:
- Hardware desk: Has traded over $1 billion worth of Bitcoin mining ASICs.
- Energy division: Services more than 75 megawatts of electrical load across two U.S. power grid regions.
- Cloud platform: Processed 1.8 million workloads in 2024 through September.
Turning Compute Power Into Financial Instruments
Luxor plans to use the funds to expand its cloud platform, provide working capital for its AI hardware division, grow engineering and sales teams, and scale its compute-derivatives trading desk.
A key component of this effort is Luxor's over-the-counter (OTC) desk. The platform already offers cash-settled options, forwards, and risk backstops linked to compute-rental indexes.
This structure turns raw AI computing power into a financial product that businesses can easily price and hedge against future market changes.
Compute markets are converging: the same miners, power sites and capital that served digital mining are now powering AI, said Nick Hansen, Luxor's CEO and co-founder.
The Wider Shift From Bitcoin Mining to AI
Luxor's funding reflects a broader trend across the cryptocurrency sector. Bitcoin miners are increasingly repurposing their power supply and data center sites for AI tasks.
Some mining companies have signed multi-billion-dollar hyperscaler contracts, while others have sold portion of their Bitcoin reserves to fund the transition into high-performance computing.
Market analysts at financial institutions like VanEck and Bernstein view miners as essential players in the AI sector due to their access to large-scale electricity and ready-to-use power infrastructure.
During this transition, Bitcoin (BTCBTC+0.43%) traded around $80,296, down 2.26% over 24 hours, with daily trading volumes hovering around $1.1 billion. Digital asset prices remain subject to short-term market volatility.
