Grayscale Launches In-Kind Crypto Deposits for 10 ETFs

A New Way to Turn Crypto Into ETF Shares
Crypto investors holding large balances of Bitcoin, SolanaSOL+1.50%, or XRP have a new path into traditional finance. Asset management firm Grayscale announced that eligible investors can now swap digital assets directly for shares across ten of its investment products.
In traditional finance, this mechanism is known as an in-kind contribution. Instead of selling coins for cash and using that cash to buy shares, investors can transfer their crypto directly through an approved intermediary.
This process bypasses the cash conversion step entirely. As a result, it can reduce trading friction and make crypto holdings easier to track inside standard brokerage accounts.
How Direct Crypto Contributions Work
Under the new setup, an investor can transfer eligible cryptocurrencies through an authorized participant or intermediary. In return, they receive corresponding shares in a Grayscale product.
For example, a Bitcoin holder could contribute BTCBTC+2.33% directly to receive shares in the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF. The investor maintains price exposure to Bitcoin while moving the responsibilities of self-custody over to the fund manager.
According to Grayscale's official announcement on October 21, 2026, key investor benefits include:
- Reduced operational burden of managing private keys and self-custody wallets
- Potentially lower overall execution costs by avoiding cash exchange fees
- Seamless integration of digital assets into traditional wealth management accounts
The Catch: High Minimum Deposit Requirements
While the feature sounds convenient, it comes with steep financial barriers. The entry thresholds mean this option is primarily tailored for high-net-worth individuals and institutional clients.
Based on asset prices recorded on October 20, the minimum asset values required to participate include:
- Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF: Approximately $364,800
- XRP Product: Approximately $257,000
- Dogecoin Product: Approximately $95,550
- Solana Staking ETF: Approximately $80,300
Because crypto values move constantly, these minimum required dollar amounts shift along with market prices.
Supported Assets Across the 10 Products
Grayscale expanded this direct deposit mechanism across ten different digital asset products. The full list of supported tokens includes:
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- EthereumETH+1.73%
- Solana (SOL)
- XRP (XRP)
- Dogecoin (DOGEDOGE+1.36%)
- Avalanche (AVAX)
- Chainlink (LINK)
- HyperliquidHYPE+0.05%
- Sui (SUI)
- Zcash (ZEC)
Important Risks and Regulatory Factors to Consider
Investors considering this route should weigh several practical and regulatory complexities before making a move.
First, investors cannot execute these transactions on their own. They must go through an authorized participant or connected broker. Grayscale has not publicly listed all specific qualification criteria for these participants, and third-party facilitator fees still apply.
Second, exchanging cryptocurrency for fund shares may trigger taxable events under local tax laws. Investors should consult tax professionals regarding capital gains implications.
Third, transfers carry operational risks such as network delays and price slippage during the transaction window. ETF shares can also trade at a premium or discount relative to the actual net asset value (NAV) of the underlying tokens.
Finally, these specific investment products lack certain investor protections that apply to funds registered under the U.S. Investment Company Act of 1940.

What This Means for the Crypto Market
Grayscale's update gives large crypto holders a smoother bridge into traditional finance structures. It simplifies portfolio management for institutions holding coins directly.
However, given the high minimum contribution thresholds, it remains an open question whether this feature will bring brand-new capital into the crypto ecosystem or simply reshuffle existing holdings.
