Giancarlo and Draper Dragon Back Spout's $2M Round

Big News for Tokenized Stocks on SolanaSOL+2.16%
Former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Chris Giancarlo and venture capital firm Draper Dragon have joined forces to support Spout. Spout is a new decentralized finance protocol built on the Solana blockchain.
The protocol lets holders of tokenized US stocks borrow stablecoins without paying traditional interest rates. This high-profile support follows Spout's announcement of a successful $2 million strategic funding round on October 13.
Who Is Backing Spout?
Spout co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Marc Ryan shared the full list of institutional and strategic backers who participated in the funding round. The line-up includes several established names across traditional finance and crypto.
- Institutional Backers: Draper Dragon, Anchorage Digital, Flow Traders, Taisu Ventures, Vessel Capital, Solayer, 2Square Capital, and Bering Waters Ventures.
- Strategic Partner: Solana Labs.
- Angel Investors: Chris Giancarlo (former CFTC Chairman), Anatoly Yakovenko (Solana co-founder), Raj Gokal (Solana co-founder), Dean Swennumson (Superstate co-founder), and Eric Chen (InjectiveINJ+0.77% co-founder).
Ryan expressed gratitude to early supporters who helped bring the project to life. He gave special thanks to Nick Ducoff, head of institutional growth at the Solana Foundation, Emon Motamedi, who leads the Solana Incubator at Solana Labs, and Samiz Bayan, partner at Draper Dragon.
The idea is simple to say and was hard to build. Borrowing against your own portfolio does not have to cost you interest. We are bringing prime broker economics to the masses.
Rethinking Stock Loans: From Private Banking to Crypto
Chris Giancarlo served as CFTC Chairman from 2017 to 2019. He has long advocated for moving traditional financial instruments onto blockchain networks. Giancarlo currently serves as an angel investor and strategic advisor to Spout.
In a post on X, Giancarlo highlighted how mature credit markets allow asset owners to unlock cash without selling their holdings. He compared Spout's model to traditional finance instruments like mortgages and bonds, where capital remains invested and continues to compound.
Draper Dragon published an investment thesis on October 15 detailing their interest in Spout. The firm pointed out that borrowing cash against stock portfolios has historically been a privilege reserved for wealthy private banking clients.
How Can a Loan Be Interest-Free?
Spout operates on a distinct financial mechanic to eliminate traditional interest payments for borrowers. Here is how the process works step-by-step:
- Deposit Collateral: Users deposit tokenized stock shares as collateral into the protocol.
- Take Out Loans: Borrowers can mint or draw USDCUSDC+0.18% stablecoins up to 50% of their collateral's value (a 50% loan-to-value ratio).
- No Borrower Interest: Borrowers do not pay ongoing interest fees while their loan remains active.
- Covered Calls Generate Yield: Each week, the protocol sells (writes) covered call options on the pooled collateral. Strike prices are set well above current market prices.
- Lenders Get Paid: Option buyers pay a premium to purchase these calls. That option premium is distributed directly to the lenders supplying the USDC liquidity.
Draper Dragon noted that this yield comes directly from stock option mechanics rather than speculative token emissions. However, users should keep in mind that crypto credit protocols carry risks related to smart contract security and underlying market volatility.
The Trade-Off Every Borrower Should Know
While interest-free borrowing sounds attractive, it comes with a specific trade-off regarding potential profits. Because the protocol sells call options against the deposited shares, a borrower's upside potential is capped.
If the underlying stock price rallies significantly past the option's strike price, any gains above that strike price go to the option buyer instead of the original stock holder. Borrowers sacrifice extreme upside in exchange for interest-free liquidity.
High Retail Rates vs. Onchain Alternatives
Spout's interest-free approach contrasts sharply with current retail brokerage borrowing costs. Traditional brokerages charge substantial annual interest for margin loans.
According to published rate tables from Charles Schwab and Fidelity, retail clients borrowing under $25,000 on margin face annual interest rates of 12.075%.
Draper Dragon partner Samiz Bayan emphasized that simply tokenizing a stock is only the starting point. The real value comes from making those tokenized assets productive through onchain credit mechanisms.
Spout as Onchain Credit Infrastructure
Draper Dragon sees Spout acting as a modular credit layer for the broader digital asset ecosystem. Other token issuers, trading venues, and crypto wallets could integrate Spout's framework rather than building proprietary lending systems from scratch.
This investment expands Draper Dragon's existing portfolio in real-world asset tokenization, which already includes projects like Centrifuge and Open Trade.
What Lies Ahead for Spout?
Spout is not yet live on the main Solana network. The protocol currently operates on Solana's devnet test network while preparing for its next operational phases.
CEO Marc Ryan confirmed that a private beta release is approaching soon, noting that significant development work remains ahead. Following the private beta, the team plans to transition to a full mainnet launch.
The long-term adoption of Spout will depend on execution quality, options market liquidity, and broader growth in the tokenized stock market.
Past performance of digital assets or financial products does not guarantee future results. Digital asset markets involve significant risks and price volatility.
