Crypto Recovers From Flash Crash as Volatility Looms

A Quiet Weekend Interrupted by Swift Price Swings
Weekends in the cryptocurrency market are often slow and quiet. However, the past few hours broke that routine with a sudden price drop and quick recovery across major assets.
Bitcoin experienced what traders call a flash crash. Its price dipped by roughly a thousand dollars before bouncing right back up. Many alternative coins followed a similar path, experiencing even sharper swings during what was supposed to be a calm period.
Tracking Bitcoin's Rollercoaster Week
The business week actually started on a positive note for Bitcoin. The asset rallied up to $84,250 early on. However, sellers quickly stepped in and pushed the price down to $81,000 within just a few hours.
Buyers responded just as fast. By Tuesday morning, Bitcoin was testing the $84,000 mark again. It held close to that level until middle-of-the-week economic news disrupted the momentum.
On Wednesday, the US released September Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers. Because inflation came in slightly higher than expected, Bitcoin dipped to $82,000.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) data arrived on Thursday, confirming the higher inflation narrative. Bitcoin initially fell to $80,200 before bears pushed it down to a monthly low of $79,800.
The rebound was strong. Bitcoin quickly climbed several thousand dollars and neared $83,000 on Friday. However, that rally stalled, keeping the price below $82,000 as the weekend began.
During the weekend flash crash, Bitcoin dropped from $81,600 to $80,750. It then spiked to $82,000 before returning back toward its starting level.
Past performance of digital assets is not indicative of future results. Market conditions can change rapidly.
Why Analysts Are Eyeing Potential Monday Volatility
Market observers online are discussing the possibility of a choppy Monday. This caution stems from last week's pullbacks in traditional stock markets, which sometimes spill over into digital assets.
If stock market weakness continues, crypto assets could face downward pressure. Conversely, if institutional buying returns, prices could stabilize or trend upward. Investors should keep short-term price fluctuations in mind.
According to CoinMarketCap data as of October 18, Bitcoin's market capitalization stands at $1.630 trillion. Its market dominance over alternative coins has climbed back to 60%.
How Altcoins Handled the Market Shockwave
Most high-cap altcoins went through a flash crash similar to Bitcoin's. On a 24-hour scale, many remain in negative territory.
- EthereumETH-1.02%: Dipped to $2,360 and is currently working to stay above the $2,400 level.
- XRP: Continues to test its $1.30 support level and is currently trading just below it.
- Other Altcoins in Red: ZEC, SOLSOL-1.81%, HYPE, DOGEDOGE-1.94%, TRX, LINK, and ADAADA-2.06% all posted daily losses.
On the positive side, a few coins managed to buck the trend. Monero (XMR), RAIN, and HederaHBAR+5.43% recorded gains between 3% and 4%. Meanwhile, BitTorrent (BTW) saw a standout performance, surging 17% to reach $2.43.
Overall, the total cryptocurrency market cap dipped slightly by 0.2% on the day, settling at $2.730 trillion based on QuantifyCrypto data from October 18.
