CoreWeave Stock Drops 15% After Jim Cramer Endorsement

CoreWeave Stock Falls Right After Cramer Endorsement
CoreWeave shares dropped nearly 15% on Wednesday. This sharp decline happened less than 24 hours after CNBC host Jim Cramer publicly praised the company on television.
During Tuesday's episode of Mad Money, a viewer asked Cramer about IREN, a competitor in the artificial intelligence cloud space. Cramer pointed the caller toward CoreWeave instead.
"If you want to be in that business of the neocloud, the only one that I trust and want to be in is CoreWeave," Cramer stated.
Following his statement, CoreWeave stock fell to around $65.93. Traders quickly referenced the infamous Inverse Cramer meme, a running joke where investors do the opposite of his picks. A similar event occurred previously when Intel stock fell 11% right after Cramer turned bullish on it.
What Is CoreWeave and Why Is Its Debt So High?
CoreWeave operates as a neocloud provider. Instead of offering general computing services like traditional cloud giants, neocloud firms rent out high-powered Nvidia chips directly to AI developers.
Building out this hardware requires immense capital. By June, CoreWeave had accumulated roughly $52 billion in total debt. That figure exceeded the company's stock market valuation of about $37 billion.
Bond Market Yields Signal Rising Risks
The stock sell-off followed mounting pressures in the bond market. On Tuesday, investor Chamath Palihapitiya pointed out that yields on $1.25 billion of CoreWeave bonds due in 2032 reached 15% before settling at a record high of 14.5%.
When bond yields increase, it means lenders view the debt as riskier and require higher returns. CoreWeave originally issued these bonds in June at a yield of 9.625%.
Palihapitiya publicly questioned if the AI expansion is creating a private credit bubble. Tech billionaire Elon Musk responded to the chart with a brief comment: "Yikes."
Surging Interest Expenses and Financial Losses
Carrying this debt carries heavy costs. CoreWeave's interest payments rose to $640 million during the April-to-June quarter, up from $267 million in the same period last year.
The company recorded a quarterly net loss of $626 million. This loss occurred despite revenue more than doubling to $2.58 billion over the same duration.
Opinions on this heavy borrowing remain mixed among industry experts:
- Co-founder Brannin McBee told the Financial Times that chip-backed loans are secured by valuable hardware and are not scary debt.
- D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria warned that the equity value could crash toward zero if corporate spending on AI slows down.
Analyzing Wall Street Price Targets and Assumptions
Wall Street analysts remain largely optimistic about the stock. Out of 27 analysts covering CoreWeave, 20 recommend a Buy, with an average price target of $143.96.
These analyst projections depend on key assumptions: AI spending must continue at high levels, computing demand must stay strong, and borrowing costs must remain manageable.
If AI adoption accelerates under favorable market conditions, the stock could move toward those higher targets. However, if AI spending declines or interest rates stay high, the stock could face further price drops below the lowest target of $74.
CoreWeave currently trades at around $65.93, sitting below even the most conservative analyst estimates.
Broad Sell-Off Hits Other AI Infrastructure Stocks
The decline extended beyond CoreWeave as investors reassessed the cost of financing AI growth across the market.
Several other cloud and infrastructure companies saw significant price drops during the same session:
- Nebius (NBIS) fell 10%
- IREN dropped 10%
- Hut 8 (HUT) declined 9%
- TeraWulf (WULF) fell 9%
- WYFI dropped 8%
- Cipher Mining (CIFR) fell 8%
- Oracle declined 7%
Past performance of stocks or corporate debt is not indicative of future market results. Investors continue to monitor how these companies manage their financial obligations moving forward.
