Cardano Founder Building New Programming Language

Charles Hoskinson Builds a New Language for CardanoADA-1.93%
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson recently shared some major news with the crypto community. He revealed that he is personally building a brand-new programming language for the Cardano ecosystem.
The announcement came after a community member asked about Cardano's unique benefits as a decentralized base layer. Hoskinson stepped in to share his hands-on project that aims to bring advanced cryptography to the blockchain.
What Makes This New Language Unique?
According to Hoskinson, the new programming language is designed to handle two key concepts: intents and proof-carrying data (PCD) using Groth16 proofs.
"I'm actually personally developing a programming language for Cardano. It's the first of its kind enabling intents + PCD via Groth16 proofs," Hoskinson wrote.
To make sense of these complex technical terms, here is how they work in simple language:
- Intents: Instead of writing step-by-step instructions, developers can define the final goal they want to achieve.
- Proof-Carrying Data (PCD): A method to carry verification proofs alongside data as it moves across networks.
- Groth16 Proofs: A popular Zero-Knowledge proof system that verifies information without exposing private details.
Missing Details and the Midnight Privacy Connection
Hoskinson did not share specific details like the language's name, technical specifications, or an official launch timeline.
Earlier in the week, Hoskinson also teased a major concept for Midnight, a partner blockchain for Cardano focused on data privacy.
"I'm working on a concept that only Midnight can bring to the cryptocurrency space to solve most of the problems. It's gonna be the magnum opus for my career," he said.
At this point, it is not clear if his new programming language and the Midnight initiative are related.
Hoskinson's History with Coding Languages
Hoskinson has a long history of discussing programming languages. He has long favored Haskell, which formed the foundation of Cardano's original setup.
In June 2022, Hoskinson joined a public conversation between Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey. When Musk shared his preference for C over C++, Hoskinson suggested they try Haskell instead.
However, Hoskinson has expressed mixed feelings about choosing Haskell over the years:
- May 2024: Hoskinson revealed he almost chose Clojure initially. He chose Haskell due to tools like Cloud Haskell, Liquid Haskell, and Agda.
- April 2025: In an interview, Hoskinson admitted he would likely pick a different language if he could rebuild Cardano from scratch.
Current Cardano Languages
While the new language develops, Cardano creators currently rely on several existing tools:
- Plutus: The primary Haskell-based smart contract language on Cardano.
- Aiken: A modern language designed to simplify Cardano smart contract writing.
- Compact: A privacy-focused language built specifically for Midnight.
