BNY and Citadel Test Tokenized Treasuries for Faster Trades

Wall Street Takes Another Big Step Into Blockchain
Imagine trying to buy a house, but every time you send funds, you have to wait three business days for the check to clear. That is very similar to how giant financial institutions move trillions of dollars in government bonds every day.
To fix this bottleneck, two major Wall Street heavyweights—BNY and Citadel Securities—just completed a successful test transaction. They moved tokenized U.S. Treasuries on a blockchain to show how trading firms can speed up financing.
What Are Tokenized U.S. Treasuries?
A U.S. Treasury bond is a loan given to the U.S. government. Large banks and trading firms hold billions of dollars in these bonds because they are considered safe, reliable assets.
Tokenization takes that traditional bond and creates a digital version of it on a blockchain. Think of it like swapping a paper concert ticket for a digital pass on your smartphone.
The underlying bond stays the same, but moving it around becomes much faster, cheaper, and far more flexible.
Why Collateral Movement Matters So Much
In institutional finance, government bonds act as collateral. Collateral is similar to a security deposit you hand over when borrowing something valuable.
When trading firms borrow short-term cash to fund their daily trades, they offer U.S. Treasuries as backing. If a firm makes multiple trades throughout the day, it needs to shift that collateral around rapidly.
Currently, moving bonds between different accounts and settlement systems takes time. While those assets sit in transit, they are tied up and cannot be used elsewhere.
Inside the BNY and Citadel Securities Test
The test between BNY and Citadel Securities demonstrated how tokenized bonds move smoothly from settlement straight into financing.
By using blockchain smart contracts, firms can reuse their collateral much faster. This process instantly frees up cash and cuts down on wasted idle time.
"Efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets," said Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities.
Doherty emphasized that cutting down delays across the entire trade lifecycle can dramatically improve how institutional markets operate.
BNY Plans for 24/7 Global Trading Hours
BNY is the world's largest custody bank, holding trillions of dollars in assets for global clients. Because of its massive scale, its adoption of new technology carries huge weight.
The bank announced plans to launch expanded digital cash capabilities and tokenized deposit features. These tools will directly support blockchain-based settlement and financing.
Additionally, BNY plans to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement systems starting next year for Federal Reserve-eligible securities and triparty transactions.
A triparty transaction is a short-term financing agreement where a bank acts as a neutral third party to manage collateral between a borrower and a lender.
By extending these hours, BNY aims to connect seamlessly with active trading sessions in Europe and Asia.
"By using a tokenized representation of a U.S. Treasury across both settlement and financing, we are enabling a more connected, efficient and always-on financial system," said Carolyn Weinberg, chief innovation and market transformation officer at BNY.
The Broader Push Toward Onchain Assets
This pilot project is part of a major shift across global finance. Major institutions are racing to bring real-world assets onto blockchain networks.
Financial heavyweights like BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, JPMorgan, and Federated Hermes are already launching tokenized funds and securities.
Wall Street firms are adopting this technology to capture several key benefits:
- Instant Settlement: Trades settle almost immediately instead of taking days.
- Automated Processes: Smart contracts handle routine tasks automatically.
- Round-the-Clock Access: Capital moves 24/7 without waiting for traditional market hours.
- Better Capital Efficiency: Cash and collateral stay active instead of sitting idle.
Navigating Risks and Future Potential
While tokenization brings clear efficiency gains, bringing traditional financial infrastructure onto blockchains involves technological and operational risks that require continuous management.
Financial institutions must balance innovation with strict regulatory standards to ensure market stability.
Despite these challenges, tests by industry leaders like BNY and Citadel Securities show that tokenization is moving quickly from concept to reality in modern finance.
