Bitmine Near 5% ETH Cap as Tom Lee Outlines Next Phase

Bitmine Nears Its 5% EthereumETH-3.04% Ceiling
Bitmine is closing in on the end of one of the largest corporate cryptocurrency accumulation campaigns in history. Speaking at the TOKEN2049 conference, Chairman Tom Lee revealed that the firm is rapidly approaching its self-imposed limit for buying Ethereum (ETH).
According to Lee, Bitmine established a hard ceiling of holding no more than 5% of the total circulating supply of Ethereum. Interestingly, Lee shared that this cap was actually encouraged by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to prevent over-concentrated ownership.
At the time of Lee's remarks, Bitmine held roughly 6 million ETH, representing about 4.9% of Ethereum's total supply. That leaves the firm roughly 100,000 ETH away from reaching its final target.
"We said we have a 5% hard cap. We’re not going to own more than 5% of ethereum. That’s something that Vitalik kind of asked us to stop at 5%." — Tom Lee, Chairman of Bitmine
A Five-Year Strategy Finished in Just Over a Year
What makes Bitmine's accumulation plan notable is the extraordinary pace at which it was executed. When the strategy was originally designed, company leadership estimated that acquiring 5% of the network's supply would take about five years.
Instead, Bitmine completed nearly the entire process in slightly over twelve months. Even more surprising is that the firm achieved this milestone right in the middle of a crypto market downturn.
By buying aggressively while prices were subdued—frequently executing heavy purchases around the $1,500 price level—Bitmine built one of the most concentrated corporate treasuries in the crypto industry.
Final Purchases and the Shift Toward Staking
Bitmine has continued to add to its holdings even as it approaches its final target. Here is a look at their recent treasury activity:
- October 19 Purchase: Bitmine added 12,535 ETH, bringing total treasury holdings to 6,041,481 ETH (worth nearly $14.5 billion at the time).
- October 21 Staking: Just two days later, the company staked an additional 159,728 ETH (valued at approximately $390.6 million).
- High Staking Ratio: With these latest deposits, Bitmine has now deployed roughly 86.5% of its entire Ethereum reserve into staking.
This pivot shows that Bitmine is shifting its focus from active market buying to generating productive yield and supporting the consensus mechanism of the Ethereum network.
What Happens When Bitmine Stops Buying?
For over a year, Bitmine's persistent purchasing offered a significant institutional bid for Ethereum. As that buying spree comes to a close, market participants are watching closely to see what will drive future demand.
Once Bitmine hits its 5% cap, market dynamics will shift toward other institutional catalysts. If spot ETF inflows remain steady and decentralized application activity grows, Ethereum could maintain constructive market momentum. Conversely, if spot ETF flows turn negative or broader macroeconomic pressure increases, the loss of Bitmine's consistent buying power could lead to increased price fluctuations.

Institutional Access and Venture Capital Regrets
Beyond its digital asset balance sheet, Bitmine has also expanded its footprint in traditional financial markets. The company's stock was recently added to the Russell 1000 index, giving traditional equity investors a direct stock market route to gain exposure to Ethereum.
During his appearance, Tom Lee—who is also the head of research at Fundstrat—shared insights regarding traditional venture capitalists (VCs). He noted that many venture investors he has known over the past decade now express regret for not holding BitcoinBTC-2.16% directly, as Bitcoin experienced massive gains of up to 80x over a ten-year period.
While historical market cycles highlight the long-term growth of top digital assets, past performance of digital assets or corporate treasuries is not an indicator or guarantee of future returns. Investors should carefully evaluate risks across changing market conditions.
