Banks Could Unlock $100M via Crypto Tech, Ripple Study Finds

Beyond Simple Storage: A New Era for Bank Custody
When most people think of crypto custody, they picture a high-tech digital vault used strictly to store digital coins. However, that perception is shifting rapidly. According to a study commissioned by blockchain payment company RippleXRP+0.94% and conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), custody is evolving into the core operating layer of modern digital finance.
Rather than keeping assets locked away passively, financial institutions are beginning to use custody systems as active infrastructure. This foundation helps power real-time payments, collateral management, lending, and stablecoin issuing as blockchain technology moves beyond initial testing phases into everyday operations.
The $100 Million Potential for Regional Banks
The BCG research highlights a significant financial opportunity for traditional lenders. The study estimates that a mid-sized regional bank holding between $200 billion and $300 billion in balance sheet assets could improve its financial performance by up to $100 million. This improvement comes from offering integrated digital asset services alongside advanced custody infrastructure.
Achieving these potential gains depends on several real-world factors, including market adoption, technology integration, and regulatory clarity. However, the shift moves the conversation away from viewing custody merely as a security cost center toward viewing it as a driver of financial growth.
Custody enables institutions to securely govern, move, and use assets across their financial workflows, not just hold them.
What Financial Institutions Want from Digital Infrastructure
As institutional interest grows, banks are becoming far more discerning about their technology choices. BCG reports that institutional custody options now secure more than 30% of all digital assets when excluding centralized crypto exchanges. Beyond fundamental security and private key protection, institutions focus heavily on specific capabilities:
- Direct legal signing control over transactions
- Flexible software deployment options (cloud or on-premise)
- Seamless connectivity across multiple blockchain networks
- Compatibility with legacy core banking technology
- Robust transaction authorization controls to handle automated bot and AI traffic
To satisfy these demands, coordinating multiple specialized custodians through a unified operational layer is quickly becoming a standard industry practice.
Real-World Bank Integration: From Turkey to Dubai
Major global financial institutions are already deploying these modern setups. For instance, Garanti BBVA Kripto, the digital asset subsidiary of Turkish banking giant Garanti BBVA, combined Ripple Custody technology with IBM hardware infrastructure to secure customer funds while maintaining high operational flexibility.
Meanwhile, Standard Chartered is demonstrating how bank custody can connect directly to institutional trading venues. Operating out of its regulated Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) branch, the bank rolled out institutional custody for Ripple USDRLUSD+1.51% on the XRP Ledger on October 12.
Standard Chartered is collaborating with Ripple and institutional venue operator LMAX Group to allow RLUSD to serve as eligible collateral for trading. Under the proposed setup, clients keep their stablecoin holdings safely inside Standard Chartered's regulated custody while using their asset value to back trading positions on LMAX. This setup remains subject to final testing, internal approvals, and legal reviews.
Industry Consolidation and Broader Market Activity
As market demand matures, BCG expects the custodian landscape to consolidate. Tech providers capable of combining financial services, linking disparate blockchain networks, or providing plug-and-play modular tools are expected to lead the market.
At the same time, institutional funding in the sector continues to grow. Companies like Evernorth, supported by Ripple, are actively raising capital to expand their digital asset holdings. Evernorth plans to accumulate more XRP tokens, backed by existing warrants that could unlock up to $132.2 million in additional capital.
These trends signal that traditional finance and digital assets are steadily converging. As institutional infrastructure matures, banks are finding practical ways to participate in modern financial rails while adhering to rigorous regulatory frameworks.
