Wall Street Friday Panic May Fade Monday as Bitcoin Holds

Wall Street had a rough finish to the week as stock prices dropped and fear swept through the market. The S&P 500 fell 1.09% on Friday, sending Wall Street's main fear gauge—the VIX index—soaring 21.5% to close at 19.99. According to data from TradingView, that was the index's largest one-day jump since June 5.
However, historical data and calm weekend trading in Bitcoin suggest that Friday's panic might cool off quickly once traditional markets reopen on Monday morning.
What Is the VIX and Why Does Bitcoin Matter Here?
Think of Cboe's VIX as Wall Street's mood ring. It measures how much options traders expect the S&P 500 stock index to swing over the next 30 days. When investors get nervous, they buy options contracts to protect their portfolios against sudden crashes, which drives the VIX index higher.
While traditional stock exchanges close over the weekend, crypto markets operate non-stop. Because Bitcoin is a major 24/7 global financial asset, weekend moves in Bitcoin are often used as an early indicator of global investor sentiment before stock markets open on Monday.
Right now, Bitcoin continues to trade comfortably above $80,000 around $81,030.77. Its steady range suggests crypto traders are not panicking over the weekend news.
Why Did Wall Street Spook Investors on Friday?
A combination of artificial intelligence concerns and geopolitical headlines unsettled traders at the end of the week. AI stocks took heavy losses, and the cost of buying default insurance on AI-related companies surged to record high levels.
Geopolitical tensions also pushed crude oil prices up. On Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards reported that two oil tankers caught fire after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, conflict along the Russia-Ukraine front showed signs of escalating.
Because of these uncertainties, some options traders are betting volatility will remain high through mid-November. According to CNBC, traders bought 9,200 call options at a 20-strike price expiring Nov. 18 for $1.7 million, alongside 12,500 call options at a 23-strike price for $1.1 million. These trades wager that the VIX will stay above 23 through late November.
What Does History Say About Friday VIX Spikes?
Although options traders are positioning for continued swings, historical trends suggest big Friday spikes rarely hold their momentum.
A CoinDesk analysis shows that since January 1990, the VIX has jumped 20% or more on a Friday 32 times (excluding this latest occurrence). On the following Monday, the index fell 25 times and rose only 7 times. Investors typically digest news over the weekend, leading to an average Monday VIX decline of 4.5%.
Looking further ahead, the VIX was lower one month later in 25 out of those 32 cases, with a median decline of 16%.
End-of-Year Seasonality and Crypto Stability
Seasonal trends also lean toward stock market calm toward the end of the year. Over the past 36 years, the VIX has declined in November 25 times, with a median drop of 7.2%. From late October through the end of December, the index fell in 22 of 36 years, posting a median drop of 9.4%.
Meanwhile, crypto volatility indicators show minimal stress. Volmex's Bitcoin volatility index (BVIV), which measures 30-day expected BTCBTC-0.11% price swings, slipped 1% on Friday to under 40% and remained quiet over the weekend.
Prediction market participants on Polymarket also remain unfazed, giving just an 9% probability that an AI market bubble bursts this year.
Past performance of digital assets and traditional market indexes is no guarantee of future returns.
Potential Risks to Keep in Mind
While historical data favors a quieter Monday, market stability is never guaranteed. In 7 of the 32 historical cases, the VIX continued climbing sharply on Monday—such as during market drops in August 2015, February 2018, and August 2024.
Even after Friday's surge, the VIX sits at 19.99, just below the 20 mark. Since 1990, the VIX has traded above 20 on more than a third of all trading days, and above 30 on 8% of days. If fresh geopolitical or macroeconomic worries emerge when trading starts, the fear index could still advance.
