UAE-Led Operation Flags $39B in Global Online and Crypto Scams

Global Task Force Tackles Massive $39 Billion Online Fraud Network
Imagine law enforcement agencies from around the globe uniting to stop digital scam artists in their tracks. That is exactly what happened during a major international crackdown led by the United Arab Emirates.
Between July and September 2026, authorities identified more than $39 billion connected to fraud schemes and digital assets. This coordinated operation highlights both the vast scale of cross-border financial crime and the growing global effort to combat it.
Police forces are now working to recover those flagged funds. They aim to disrupt complex criminal networks that abuse online platforms, financial services, and cryptocurrencies.
What Was Operation Confrontation Ghost?
The global initiative was named Operation Confrontation Ghost. Spearheaded by the UAE Ministry of Interior, the intense operation ran for three months from July 1 through September 30.
Law enforcement agencies focused heavily on modern cyberCYBER-8.22% threats. They targeted artificial intelligence-enabled fraud, complex financial scams operating on digital platforms, and online sextortion schemes.
According to WAM, the official Emirates News Agency, the operation successfully thwarted over 123.71 million online fraud attempts worldwide.
Looking at the Operation by the Numbers
The sheer scale of Operation Confrontation Ghost is remarkable. Law enforcement officers across 30 countries worked in sync to deliver major blows to illegal online operations.
Here is a breakdown of what the three-month operation accomplished:
- Stopped at least 123.71 million online fraud attempts worldwide.
- Arrested more than 960 suspects connected to fraud networks.
- Raided 29 physical fraud centers operating in various regions.
- Identified over 3,500 active suspects and more than 15,500 victims.
- Blocked 4,126 suspicious bank accounts used for money laundering.
- Closed over 570 social media accounts used to lure unsuspecting victims.
- Shared more than 9,000 pieces of actionable intelligence across borders.
Combining Forces: Public Agencies and Private Tech Giants
Winning the fight against modern cybercrime requires more than traditional police work. It demands close cooperation between governments and private sector technology leaders.
Operation Confrontation Ghost brought together Interpol, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, and 13 major private corporations. Industry leaders like Crypto.com, Meta, Mastercard, and TikTok played active roles in sharing insights and tracking threats.
Technology also played a major protective role during this period. Advanced tokenization technology helped secure more than four billion transactions every month. This technology effectively reduced fraud risks and strengthened data privacy for everyday users.
Presenting Findings at the United Nations in Vienna
The results of Operation Confrontation Ghost were officially presented in Vienna, Austria. The presentation took place during a special UAE-organized side event at the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime.
Officials highlighted how rapid communication between countries makes it harder for criminals to hide illicit money.
Real-time intelligence sharing helps agencies spot suspicious activity faster and trace illicit money flows.
That key message was delivered by Colonel Dana Al Marzouqi, Director-General of the UAE Interior Ministry International Affairs Bureau. UN leadership also praised the joint operation as a benchmark for future international cooperation.
Criminals' use of AI, bank accounts, and cryptocurrencies to move money and hide its origins demands better countermeasures and closer coordination.
Dr. Monica Juma, Executive Director at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), emphasized that police forces must stay ahead of evolving technologies used by criminal syndicates.
U.S. Law Enforcement Steps Up Parallel Investigations
The United States has also been aggressively pursuing similar cross-border scam networks. Federal agencies are deploying specialized task forces to track down digital asset fraud.
In September, the U.S. Justice Department Scam Center Strike Force seized a Telegram-based scam marketplace known as Xinbi Guarantee. In just a single day, federal agents restrained approximately $52 million in cryptocurrency linked to the platform.
This single action pushed the Strike Force total restrained assets to roughly $938 million since its establishment in November 2025.
Understanding the Rising Impact of Investment Scams
Official figures show that financial scams have grown significantly over recent years. Scammers increasingly rely on sophisticated online tools to target potential victims.
U.S. federal data revealed that crypto investment fraud losses reached $8.65 billion in 2025. This represented an 89% increase compared to losses recorded in 2023.
However, law enforcement officials believe the actual damage is even higher. The FBI notes that these official statistics are significantly underrepresented because many victims never report their losses to the authorities.
Why Global Police Operations Matter for Crypto Users
Large-scale crackdowns like Operation Confrontation Ghost serve as an important reminder for anyone using digital platforms and financial services.
Scammers continuously adapt their methods, using artificial intelligence and social media to trick people. While tokenization and security protocols help safeguard transactions, personal vigilance remains essential.
International cooperation between law enforcement, online platforms, and financial networks helps make the broader ecosystem safer for everyone.
