Thailand Launches Crypto QR Payment App for Tourists

Everyday Crypto Spending Arrives in Thailand
Imagine scanning a local street food vendor's QR code in Bangkok and paying seamlessly with your digital assets. That convenience is now becoming a reality for international travelers visiting Thailand.
A new fintech collaboration has launched a digital wallet application named WORPT. This platform allows foreign tourists to convert their digital assets directly into Thai Baht (THB) to pay merchants through Thailand's widely used national QR Promptpay network.
At the time of the announcement on October 26, 2026, major cryptocurrencies were trading steadily, with Bitcoin (BTCBTC+0.35%) around $79,678 (+0.15%) and EthereumETH+0.57% at $2,311 (+0.23%). Please note that past performance of digital assets does not guarantee future returns.
How the WORPT App Works Under SEC Guidance
The WORPT wallet platform was developed under Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) tourist Digipay regulatory sandbox initiative. This regulatory framework allows fintech projects to test innovative financial solutions under supervised conditions.
Jointly created by Waan Exchange (Waanx) and Wipay, WORPT integrates the complete payment process. It manages everything from accepting digital token deposits to executing foreign exchange into local currency and settling payment to merchants.
Crucially, local businesses in Thailand do not accept cryptocurrency directly under this sandbox framework. Instead, transactions settle entirely in local fiat currency (Thai Baht) through standard payment channels. This setup protects merchants from token price volatility while giving travelers easy spending access.
Currently, the WORPT platform supports two leading USD-pegged stablecoins: TetherUSDT-0.03% and USD Coin (USDCUSDC-0.12%).
Key Partnerships and Upcoming Visa Integration
Building a seamless national crypto payment gateway requires strong industry partners across retail, technology, and payment networks.
Key collaborators behind the project include stablecoin issuer Tether, major retail operator The Mall Group, and payments network Visa.
Looking ahead, WORPT is preparing to introduce both physical and virtual Visa prepaid cards. Once launched, users will share a single Thai Baht balance for both QR-code payments and card transactions, removing the need for separate top-ups or transfers.
Moving Crypto from Speculation to Everyday Use
For years, digital tokens were viewed primarily as speculative trading assets. WORPT executives aim to shift that perception by providing practical utility for visitors.
"The key objective behind WORPT is to enable international travelers to make practical use of the cryptocurrencies they already have while visiting Thailand," said Pavin Jittiwongsamarn, co-founder of WORPT. "We have therefore focused on connecting the entire processâĶ providing travelers with greater convenience and more payment options throughout their journey."
Co-founder Janeboon Roonnaphaya also highlighted the broader significance of turning digital currencies into everyday payment tools.
"Historically, cryptocurrencies have largely been viewed as assets for holding and trading," noted Janeboon Roonnaphaya. "What makes the current development particularly significant is their transition toward practical utility in everyday life."
Regulatory Compliance and Next Steps
Operating inside an official SEC regulatory sandbox requires strict adherence to financial security and user verification rules.
WORPT leadership confirmed that the platform fully complies with standard framework guidelines, including:
- Identity verification protocols (Know Your Customer / KYC)
- Real-time transaction monitoring
- Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulatory requirements
To mark the launch and explore the future of digital asset payments in tourist economies, WORPT executives, along with Tether, The Mall Group, and Thai regulators, plan to host an official industry panel discussion in November 2026.
Thailand Regulator Explores Spot Crypto ETFs
Alongside payment innovation, Thailand's financial regulators are reportedly preparing to introduce spot cryptocurrency ETFs with a specialized market-making system to maintain liquidity.
While digital asset payment utilities continue to grow, investors should always review market risks carefully. Historical performance of digital assets or financial instruments is not an indicator of future performance.
