Tesla Holds Nearly $1B in Bitcoin: A Look at the Data

Tesla's Bitcoin Journey: From 2021 to Today
Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla continues to hold a significant amount of Bitcoin on its balance sheet. According to recent blockchain data from intelligence firm Arkham as of October 13, 2026, Tesla holds 8,430 BTCBTC+0.71%.
At current market prices, this digital asset position is worth approximately $960 million. Even though crypto markets regularly experience sharp price swings, Tesla has kept this exact stash steady for roughly four years.
How Tesla Built and Managed Its Bitcoin Position
Tesla made headlines across the financial world back in February 2021. Led by billionaire CEO Elon Musk, the company disclosed a massive $1.5 billion purchase of Bitcoin.
Shortly after that purchase, Bitcoin experienced a substantial price rally. That surge pushed the value of Tesla's holdings above $2 billion, briefly touching around $2.5 billion at its peak.
However, Tesla did not hold all of its original assets indefinitely. Over time, the company adjusted its balance sheet exposure through a few key decisions:
- Trimming in 2021: Tesla sold 4,670 BTC shortly after its purchase to test the liquidity of the Bitcoin market.
- Rebalancing in 2022: During the wider market turbulence in May 2022 connected to the TerraLUNA+0.36% crash, Tesla liquidated a major portion of its remaining tokens.
- Holding Steady: Following those sales, Tesla's Bitcoin balance stabilized at 8,430 BTC and has remained unchanged since 2022.
Understanding the Numbers: Paper Gains and Volatility
Back in late 2022, Tesla's remaining 8,430 BTC was worth around $250 million. As of October 2026, that same stack is worth close to $960 million.
This represents an unrealized paper gain of more than $710 million compared to its 2022 valuation. However, because digital asset prices move quickly up and down, paper gains can shift rapidly depending on broader market conditions.

Where Tesla Stands Among Corporate Holders
Despite selling off a substantial part of its original investment, Tesla remains one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders in the world today.
Holding crypto assets on a corporate balance sheet carries both opportunity and risk. While price recoveries can boost company valuations on paper, sudden market downturns can just as quickly impact accounting reserves.
