Stellar Hosts Historic U.S. Debt Backed Repo Transaction

A Major Milestone for Wall Street on Blockchain
In a major step forward for institutional crypto adoption, fintech firm Ascend Markets and trading platform M1X Global announced the completion of a historic deal on October 23, 2026. They successfully executed the first regulated short-term collateralized lending transaction, known as a repurchase agreement or repo, on the StellarXLM+0.57% blockchain.
This multi-million dollar interbank loan used digitized U.S. Treasury bonds as collateral. By settling directly on-chain, the transaction bypassed traditional banking clearinghouses entirely, proving that institutional finance can run smoothly without centralized intermediaries.
Code Replaces Wall Street Bankers Over the Weekend
Traditional repo markets usually suffer from big limitations. They only operate during normal banking hours and require massive back-office teams to manually revalue collateral. This groundbreaking transaction replaced that entire process with smart contracts.
The loan ran continuously for 72 hours from October 16 to October 19, 2026. This meant it operated straight through the weekend when standard banks were completely closed.
- 72 Continuous Rollovers: The smart contract automatically extended the loan every hour for 72 consecutive cycles without any human intervention.
- Automated Processing: The underlying algorithm independently locked collateral, calculated interest, and settled funds.
- Sub-Cent Cost: Remarkably, total network transaction fees across all 72 cycles combined came out to less than one U.S. cent.
Understanding the Deal Structure and Risk Controls
To ensure strict compliance with institutional standards, the transaction was fully aligned with guidelines set by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Every piece of the process followed strict technical and financial parameters.
- Collateral and Settlement: Borrowers used USDM1 bonds issued by M1X Global—backed 1:1 by U.S. Treasury bills under New York state law—as collateral against USDCUSDC+0.09% stablecoins.
- Pricing and Interest Rates: The annual loan rate was set at SOFR plus 10 basis points, translating to an interest rate of 3.98% per annum.
- Real-Time Risk Monitoring: ChainlinkLINK+1.19% decentralized oracles constantly tracked the value of the collateral, enforcing a 2% haircut and a maximum Loan-To-Value (LTV) cap of 98%.
- Automated Compliance: Identity checks and regulatory KYC/AML screening were executed automatically on-chain using the ERC-3643 and SEP-57 technical standards.
Stellar's Real World Asset Market Hits $3.64 Billion
This successful transaction marks a huge shift in how big institutions can manage liquidity on public blockchains. Data from rwa.xyz shows that by late October 2026, the total value of Real World Assets (RWA) on the Stellar network reached $3.64 billion.
This capital is primarily distributed among prominent financial institutions running money market funds on the network:
- Spicet Asset Management: $2.4 billion
- Oasis: $557.92 million
- Franklin Templeton: $411.90 million
By adding instant rehypothecation mechanisms through assets like USDM1, financial institutions now have clear, real-world proof that sovereign debt can be unlocked and traded 24/7/365 with near-zero overhead expenses.
