Starlink Powers Wall Street Rallies for United and SpaceX

How Fast In-Flight Wi-Fi is Changing the Game
Have you ever picked one airline over another just to get better Wi-Fi in the air? According to United Airlines, plenty of passengers are doing exactly that.
Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service is becoming a major selling point for United Airlines while generating massive revenue for SpaceX. Following their third-quarter earnings reports, shares for both companies climbed more than 6%.
Past performance of corporate shares or financial assets does not guarantee future results. However, this recent market surge shows how a single technology can boost two completely different industries at the same time.
United Airlines Q3 Highlights: Breakdown of the Numbers
United Airlines delivered a strong overall quarterly report, led by solid passenger demand despite facing higher fuel expenses.
- Total Revenue: $17.88 billion (Estimated: $17.89 billion, up 17.4% year-over-year)
- Adjusted EPS: $2.54 (Estimated: $2.59, down 8.6% year-over-year)
- Adjusted Pre-Tax Income: $1.11 billion (Met estimates of $1.11 billion)
- Adjusted Operating Income: $1.23 billion (Estimated: $1.26 billion)
- Adjusted Net Income: $833 million (Estimated: $867 million)
Even though some profit numbers slightly missed Wall Street estimates, United brought in a record $17.9 billion in total revenue for the quarter. Investors welcomed the overall resilience in travel demand.
Are Passengers Really Switching Airlines for Starlink?
United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby believes high-speed satellite Wi-Fi gives the airline a unique competitive advantage.
“We are winning new long-term, brand-loyal United customers because they are trying us for Starlink.” — Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines
United has already equipped over 640 aircraft with Starlink systems, adding roughly three new planes to the list every single day. About half of its scheduled flights currently offer the connection completely free to MileagePlus loyalty members.
In September alone, more than 5.4 million passengers experienced Starlink during their flights. United reported that customer service satisfaction scores on planes with Starlink are nearly double those using older Wi-Fi technology.
Looking ahead, CEO Scott Kirby expects Starlink to increase revenue per available seat mile (RASM) by 2027. United aims to cover 87% of its fleet by June and complete fleet-wide installation by the end of the year.
During Wednesday's earnings call, Kirby admitted that direct evidence of passengers switching carriers remains largely anecdotal for now. United has not yet disclosed precise earnings figures generated directly by Starlink.
SpaceX Financials: Starlink turns into a Major Cash Engine
While United is using Starlink to win customer loyalty, SpaceX is already enjoying direct financial gains from satellite internet sales.
SpaceX's connectivity division, which includes Starlink, pulled in $5.25 billion in third-quarter revenue. That represents an impressive 69% increase compared to the same period last year. Operating income for this segment nearly doubled to $2.37 billion, making it the largest source of operating profit for SpaceX.
- Total SpaceX Revenue: $14.6 billion (according to SEC filings)
- Net Income: $4.4 billion
- Connectivity Revenue: $5.25 billion (up 69% YoY)
- Connectivity Operating Profit: $2.37 billion (nearly doubled YoY)
- AI Division Sales: $7.56 billion
Even though SpaceX's artificial intelligence division brought in higher total sales at $7.56 billion, satellite connectivity generated the largest share of profits.
Was Starlink the Sole Driver Behind the Stock Rallies?
While Starlink provided positive momentum, other major factors contributed to stock price growth for both companies.
United's share increase was supported by record quarterly revenue and steady consumer demand, even as fuel costs rose and earnings guidance came in lower than expected.
Meanwhile, SpaceX gained momentum from beating overall quarterly earnings expectations, rapid growth in its AI unit, and comments from Elon Musk discussing possible merger talks with Tesla.
Investors should remember that corporate earnings and stock values fluctuate based on general economic conditions, energy markets, and operational costs. Past performance of digital assets or corporate stocks does not guarantee future market results.
Nevertheless, Starlink has proven to be far more than an ambitious technology experiment. It has evolved into a vital commercial feature for United Airlines and a powerful earnings machine for SpaceX.
