Ripple Partners with Privy for AI Payments on XRPL

Imagine software programs buying services from each other without a human ever clicking a button. That scenario is fast becoming reality in the crypto world.
On October 13, 2026, blockchain company RippleXRP+0.07% announced a major partnership with Privy, a wallet infrastructure platform owned by payments leader Stripe.
Together, Ripple and Privy are integrating artificial intelligence payments directly into the XRP Ledger (XRPL). As reported by Alex Dovbnya, this initiative represents a major push into the emerging field of agentic commerce.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce refers to autonomous AI agents that can independently manage funds, perform transactions, and pay for services without human intervention.
Think of an AI agent like an advanced virtual assistant. If your assistant needs additional computing power or specialized data to complete a task, it can purchase that resource on its own.
Historically, automated software struggled to make payments because traditional banking requires identity verifications that bots cannot provide. Blockchain technology offers a straightforward solution for these automated tasks.
How Privy Simplifies XRPL Wallets
Managing crypto wallets can be complicated, especially for automated software. Privy specializes in embedded and programmable wallets that simplify this technical challenge.
Through this integration, software developers can build wallet functionality directly into their applications on the XRP Ledger. This allows systems to handle digital assets like XRP and the Ripple USDRLUSD-0.17% stablecoin smoothly.
Crucially, users and software agents will not need to handle complex private keys manually. Developers can manage wallets programmatically, enable custom transaction approvals, and embed crypto payments behind the scenes.
The Power of the x402 Payment Protocol
A key component of this initiative is an open payment protocol called x402. This standard is designed to streamline automated software-to-software transactions.
Under the x402 standard, AI agents can pay for digital goods instantly without manual approval steps. Typical use cases include:
- Computational processing power for complex calculations
- API access for live data retrieval
- AI model inference for real-time decision-making
- Specialized analytical datasets
For example, an AI bot might need access to specific financial data. Using x402, the bot sends XRP or RLUSD to the provider, receives the data instantly, and continues its task. This positions XRPL as a settlement network for machine economies.
Rapid Growth in AI Activity on XRPL
Automated payments are already taking place at scale on the XRP Ledger.
According to J. Ayo Akinyele, Head of Engineering at RippleX, XRPL has processed approximately 13 million payments initiated by AI agents as of October 2026.
Network data reveals rapid growth over recent months:
- July 2026: Around 1 million automated transactions recorded
- October 2026: Reached roughly 13 million automated transactions
- Activity Share: AI payments now account for about 25% of overall XRPL activity
Past network performance and transaction volumes do not guarantee future activity or network growth.
It is also worth noting that machine-to-machine payments typically involve micro-transactions. High transaction counts reflect frequent software interactions rather than large transfer amounts.
Expanding Beyond Traditional Payments
This collaboration builds on earlier work by Ripple. In June 2026, Ripple introduced an AI Starter Kit to help developers create autonomous application features using XRP, RLUSD, and x402.
As the Privy integration progresses, additional management tools will be added:
- Transaction policy controls to set automated spending limits
- Fee sponsorship options to cover network gas fees for users
By lowering technical hurdles, Ripple and Privy aim to broaden the use cases for the XRP Ledger well beyond standard peer-to-peer transfers.
