Mystery Bets on Trump Press Secretary Pick Under Investigation

A Long Shot That Turned $173 into Over $9,600
Imagine placing a small wager on a dark-horse candidate and watching it turn into thousands of dollars overnight.
That is what happened on the prediction platform Kalshi right before Donald Trump named Katie Zacharia as Press Secretary.
Before the news broke, bettors on the platform gave Zacharia only a 1% chance of landing the position.
Three perfectly timed trades were placed right before major media outlets reported the official pick.
Kalshi is now actively investigating these suspicious trades to see if someone traded on nonpublic information.
How Kalshi and Event Contracts Work
Kalshi is a prediction market regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Users trade contracts based on real-world political and economic outcomes.
Every contract pays out $1 if the event happens. A 1% chance costs just 1 cent to buy.
Because Zacharia had a 1% chance, buying her contract was extremely cheap.
When the selection became official, those 1-cent contracts soared to their full $1 value.
A Breakdown of the Suspicious Trades
Public records show a very specific timeline leading up to the Friday announcement.
- First bet: Placed Thursday at 10:43 p.m. ET for $19, set to pay out $1,896.
- Second bet: Placed Friday at 1:41 p.m. ET for about $74, set to pay out $3,689.
- Third bet: Placed Friday at 1:41 p.m. ET for about $80, set to pay out $4,023.
In total, the traders risked less than $175 to capture more than $9,500 in potential payouts.
Just 20 minutes after the Friday trades, news outlets like The New York Times broke the story.
Trump soon confirmed the decision directly on Truth Social.
It is my Great Honor to have just appointed, as Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia… I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary, as she has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, the Media, the American...
Who Is Katie Zacharia?
Zacharia was not widely regarded as a front-runner for the Press Secretary position.
She is an attorney and regular commentator on Fox News and Newsmax.
She also advises Trump Media & Technology Group, which operates Truth Social, on communications.
Zacharia steps in to replace former Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime.
Is Kalshi Facing Growing Insider Trading Concerns?
Kalshi keeps internal records of trader accounts, even though public names are hidden.
This is not the first time political bets have drawn scrutiny from regulators.
In August, Trump teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez settled with the CFTC over speech-related trades.
Perez surrendered $107,539 in gains, paid a $65,000 fine, and accepted a three-year trading ban.
Suspicious trades around Iran news also led to an internal White House warning memo.
That memo warned White House staff against using nonpublic knowledge for personal profit.
Lawmakers also launched an insider trading investigation into three other prediction platforms last month.
Kalshi has not yet stated what action it will take following its review.
Understanding Market Risks and Regulatory Surveillance
Prediction markets offer unique insights into public events, but unfair trading practices harm market fairness.
Regulators continue to increase oversight as trading volume in event contracts grows.
Traders should remember that event markets involve high risk, and past platform outcomes do not guarantee future performance.
