Jason Calacanis Claims Bitcoin Will Never Hit New Highs

A Bold Prediction: Is BitcoinBTC+0.68%'s Peak Behind Us?
Well-known technology investor Jason Calacanis has issued a stark warning to cryptocurrency holders.
He believes Bitcoin has already seen its best days. In fact, he claims it will never set a new record price again.
Calacanis is an early-stage tech investor and co-host of the popular All-In podcast. On Tuesday, he urged investors to sell their Bitcoin before a deeper market correction takes place.
He predicted that Bitcoin could fall down to $57,000 within the next 12 months.
When Calacanis shared his view, Bitcoin was trading between $79,600 and $80,000. A fall to $57,000 would represent a drop of roughly 28% from those price levels.
His main argument centers on a fundamental shift in where global investment money is going. He argues that artificial intelligence (AI) has replaced Bitcoin as the ultimate magnet for speculative capital.
Why Calacanis Sees Troubling Signals in ETF Outflows
A key part of Calacanis' thesis relies on the recent behavior of spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs).
He views capital outflows from these institutional products as an early sign that big investors are losing interest.
"Outflows from ETFs are signal and will continue. We will test the $57K low again in the next 12 months."
Recent market data shows that spot ETF flows have indeed been volatile.
Late last week, spot Bitcoin ETFs suffered significant selling pressure, with around $774 million leaving the funds over two trading sessions.
While funds saw a modest recovery on Monday with $110.34 million in net inflows, that entire gain came from BlackRock's IBIT fund alone.
Calacanis argues this pattern suggests institutional appetite is wavering. However, market observers point out that ETF flows can reverse quickly depending on broader macroeconomic conditions.
Artificial Intelligence vs. Bitcoin: Productive Assets vs. Store of Value
Why does Calacanis think AI is a better place for capital than Bitcoin?
To understand his view, it helps to compare how technology investors evaluate different types of assets.
Bitcoin is often described as digital gold. It operates as a store of value with a fixed supply.
However, Calacanis argues that Bitcoin offers very little utility beyond holding value.
"Why put your resources into a dead network that offers nothing beyond a store of value? Just sell and shift from bitcoin to Super Intelligence because one provides little to no value, and the other provides unlimited upside for humanity."
In simple terms, he believes AI companies create productive technology that generates real-world economic output.
He disclosed that he remains invested in Bittensor's TAOTAO-0.12% token. This highlights his preference for crypto projects tied directly to AI infrastructure and computing power over purely monetary networks.
Bitcoin Advocates Fire Back: Understanding Scarcity and Abundance
Unsurprisingly, Calacanis' comments drew strong pushback from prominent figures in the crypto community.
His remarks followed a similarly bearish statement from his podcast co-host, Chamath Palihapitiya. Palihapitiya suggested AI might eventually render Bitcoin worthless by breaking its security software.
Michael Saylor, the founder of MicroStrategy and a leading Bitcoin advocate, offered a thoughtful counter-argument on social media.
"AI creates abundance. Bitcoin enforces scarcity. One expands humanity's ability to create value. The other lets us preserve and transfer it across time and space. Digital Intelligence and Digital Capital are complementary, Jason. The world needs both."
Saylor's perspective relies on an important distinction:
- AI produces abundance: It makes software, content, and services cheaper and more accessible.
- Bitcoin enforces scarcity: It guarantees a hard cap of 21 million coins that cannot be inflated.
- Together they complement: AI generates economic wealth, while Bitcoin provides a secure place to store that wealth.
Other industry voices pointed out Calacanis' history of missing major price rallies.
Bitcoin proponent Dan Held reminded Calacanis of a similar call he made back in 2018.
"Is this you too from 2018 when bitcoin was worth $5,500? If we had listened to you we would have missed out on a 14x return."
It is important to remember that past returns of digital assets are not indicative of future performance. Investors can track live market data on platforms such as bitkub.com/en/market/BTC.
A Nine-Year History of Bitcoin Skepticism
To fully understand Calacanis' prediction, it helps to look at his long history with Bitcoin.
This is far from the first time he has predicted trouble for the digital asset.
Interestingly, Calacanis was an early buyer. He revealed that he purchased substantial amounts of Bitcoin when it was priced between $100 and $200.
Yet despite owning it early, his public outlook has swung dramatically over the years:
- In 2018: He gave Bitcoin a high probability of dropping to zero dollars.
- In May 2019: He predicted Bitcoin would trade between $0 and $500, arguing newer technologies would replace it.
- In late 2024: He softened his stance, calling Bitcoin "too big to fail" and lowering its odds of total collapse to under 5%.
- In October 2026: He returned to an extreme bearish view, declaring Bitcoin will never break its all-time high again.
Because of these repeated warnings followed by market recoveries, many crypto commentators now compare Calacanis to gold advocate Peter Schiff, who has famously called for Bitcoin's end for over a decade.
Evaluating Potential Market Scenarios
When assessing predictions like Calacanis' $57,000 price target, investors should analyze the underlying conditions required for different market outcomes.
Price forecasts in cryptocurrency depend entirely on specific economic triggers rather than certainties.
Here is how potential scenarios stack up:
- Downside Scenario ($57,000 or lower): If spot ETF outflows persist, institutional demand cools, and tech investors direct speculative capital into AI companies, Bitcoin could face downward price pressure over the next 12 months.
- Upside Scenario (New All-Time Highs): If global central banks ease monetary policy, ETF inflows resume, and institutional adoption expands, Bitcoin could rebound and challenge previous records.
- Consolidation Scenario: Bitcoin may trade sideways in a broad range between $60,000 and $85,000 while the market digests global economic data and technology trends.
Digital asset markets remain highly volatile. Asset prices can swing dramatically based on global economic changes, regulatory updates, and investor sentiment.
Whether Calacanis is right about AI drawing capital away from Bitcoin, or whether Saylor is right about scarcity remaining essential, market participants should always evaluate risk carefully before making financial decisions.
