HSBC Launches First Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin RCHKD

Banking giant HSBC has officially launched its first regulated stablecoin, bringing digital currency payments directly to millions of everyday users in Hong Kong.
The new token, named HSBC Red Coin (RCHKD), is pegged directly to the Hong Kong dollar. It offers instant payment solutions for everyday consumers and merchants across the region.
Bringing Digital Dollars to 3.3 Million Users
HSBC announced the launch of Red Coin on October 23, 2026. The stablecoin is being rolled out through HSBC's popular mobile payment platform, PayMe.
This integration instantly opens up digital currency access to a massive user base. Over the coming days, customers can activate their stablecoin wallets right inside the PayMe app.
Here is what users can do with Red Coin at launch:
- Send instant peer-to-peer money transfers to friends and family.
- Make seamless payments at more than 100,000 local merchants.
- Hold a digital asset that maintains a strict 1:1 value ratio with the Hong Kong dollar.
Fully Regulated and Safe Storage
Safety and regulatory compliance are front and center for this project. HSBC secured its stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April under the region's updated regulatory framework.
To keep the token steady, Red Coin is fully backed by highly liquid and segregated assets held separately by the bank.
Before opening the doors to the public, HSBC ran extensive internal tests. A pilot program involving nearly 100 HSBC employees tested wallet activation, token issuance, and peer-to-peer transfers to ensure everything operates smoothly.
What Company Leaders Say
Leadership at HSBC views this move as a natural evolution of global banking and payment infrastructure.
Money, assets, and information are moving from traditional infrastructure to always-on, data-rich and increasingly programmable digital networks.
Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Hong Kong, emphasized that the bank wants to build practical, real-world financial tools to help customers transition into this modern digital era.
John O'Neill, Managing Director of Digital Assets and Currencies at HSBC, pointed out that this roll-out is only the first step in a much bigger plan.
This is only the beginning.
O'Neill framed the launch as a major milestone toward making fully regulated digital assets accessible to everyday citizens across Hong Kong.
Future Plans: Expansion to Banking Apps and Tokenized Funds
HSBC does not plan to stop at peer-to-peer payments on PayMe. The bank has mapped out several expansion phases for Red Coin scheduled for later this year.
- Main Banking App Integration: Stablecoin wallets will be integrated directly into the standard HSBC HK Mobile Banking App.
- Tokenized Investments: Customers will gain the ability to buy tokenized financial products using Red Coin, including a new share class of HSBC's Hong Kong dollar money market fund.
- Wholesale & Institutional Use: The bank plans to expand Red Coin into corporate treasury operations and institutional settlement systems.
Building on HSBC's Blockchain History
Red Coin is not HSBC's first foray into distributed ledger technology. The global bank has been steadily building out its digital asset ecosystem over recent years.
Key milestones in HSBC's ongoing Web3 journey include:
- Orion Bond Platform: Launched in 2023, HSBC's digital bond platform has facilitated over $8.3 billion in digitally native bond issuances.
- Tokenized Gold: Debuted in 2024, HSBC's gold tokenization project has generated $2.5 billion in trading volume across 390,000 completed transactions.
- Tokenized Deposits: The bank already operates tokenized deposit services tailored for wholesale institutional payments.
Note: Past operational activity and digital asset volumes do not guarantee future performance or adoption rates.
Hong Kong's Vision as a Global Crypto Capital
The release of HSBC's Red Coin comes at a critical time for Hong Kong. Local regulators have worked hard to build clear, protective frameworks designed to attract mainstream financial institutions to the Web3 space.
By encouraging established banks like HSBC to issue fully regulated, fiat-backed stablecoins, Hong Kong continues to solidify its position as a primary global hub for digital asset innovation.
