Euronext Halts CoinShares Zcash ETP Before Debut

Euronext Pauses CoinShares Zcash ETP Launch
European exchange operator Euronext has put a temporary pause on the launch of CoinShares' new Zcash Exchange-Traded Product (ETP). The decision came right before the financial product was set to make its official trading debut.
A spokesperson for Euronext confirmed the suspension directly to Cointelegraph. The delay stems from specific operational settlement requirements that must be resolved before trading can begin safely.
The suspension was due to operational settlement requirements and remains in effect until settlement operations are supported by the CSD.
Understanding the Key Financial Terms
To understand why this delay occurred, it helps to break down how traditional stock exchanges interact with crypto investment products.
What is an ETP?
An Exchange-Traded Product (ETP) is a financial instrument that tracks an underlying asset, like a stock, commodity, or cryptocurrency. It trades on traditional stock exchanges just like regular shares.
For investors, buying an ETP offers exposure to digital assets without the need to set up a personal crypto wallet or manage private keys.
What is a Central Securities Depository (CSD)?
A Central Securities Depository (CSD) acts as the back-end infrastructure for financial markets. It holds securities and ensures that money and assets are transferred correctly between buyers and sellers.
This final step of transferring ownership and money is known as settlement. Without a fully functional settlement pipeline at the CSD level, an exchange cannot safely facilitate trading.
Why Was the Zcash ETP Delayed?
Launching a crypto-backed product on a traditional European exchange requires seamless coordination between the asset manager, the exchange, and the settlement depository.
In this case, the CSD responsible for settlement does not yet support the operational requirements needed for this Zcash product. Euronext decided to halt the launch until these back-end processes are fully supported.
Zcash and Traditional Finance Plumbing
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that uses cryptographic zero-knowledge proofs to give users optional transaction privacy.
Integrating privacy-centric digital assets into traditional financial infrastructure often requires specialized custodian arrangements and compliance protocols.
What Lies Ahead for CoinShares and Investors?
CoinShares is one of Europe's largest digital asset investment firms. While this temporary halt delays immediate access to their Zcash product on Euronext, such technical hiccups are not uncommon when bridging traditional stock markets with digital tokens.
The suspension will stay in place until the CSD successfully updates its technical framework to handle settlement for the product. Market participants will be watching for further announcements from both Euronext and CoinShares.
