Ethereum Whales Cash Out: Why OG Holders Are Selling

A Massive $7 Million Cash Out After 9 Years
Imagine buying a few thousand dollars worth of digital currency and holding onto it for nearly ten years, only to watch it grow into a life-changing fortune. That is exactly what just happened for one early EthereumETH-0.14% investor.
On-chain analytics platform Lookonchain reported on Friday, October 23, 2026, that an Ethereum "OG" wallet sold 3,000 ETH tokens worth over $7.2 million (specifically $7.23 million).
The long-term investor originally bought these tokens nine years ago at an average price of just $18.83 each. That turned an initial outlay of around $56,000 into more than $7 million, representing a return of roughly 128x to 130x on the position.
Past performance of digital assets is no guarantee of future returns. Crypto markets remain volatile, and prices can fluctuate quickly. Readers can check current live asset rates on Bitkub Market.
A Spate of Dormant Wallets Waking Up in October
This $7.23 million sale is not an isolated event. Over the past few weeks, several of the oldest wallets in the cryptocurrency space have suddenly awakened after nearly ten years of inactivity.
Here are the notable transactions recorded from early ETH holders recently:
- Kraken Transfer: Earlier this month, an early investor moved 6,369 ETH worth approximately $16 million to Kraken after acquiring the stash when ETH was just $14 per token.
- Coinbase ICO Deposit: Another participant from Ethereum's initial coin offering (ICO) transferred 13,330 ETH—valued at well over $36 million—to Coinbase in October.
- The ICO Origins: That same ICO wallet originally acquired a total of 170,000 ETH during the 2015 ICO at an original price of only $0.31 per token.
- August Whale Sale: Back in August, another ICO investor moved their entire balance of 2,000 ETH (worth $3.77 million at the time) to Coinbase, roughly 11 years after purchasing them for a grand total of just $622. That move yielded an astonishing gain of more than 6,000x.
How Is Ethereum's Market Price Reacting?
These whale transfers arrive during an interesting market phase for Ethereum.
Over recent months, Ethereum climbed steadily from under $2,000 to reach $2,800 before its upward momentum stalled. During a subsequent market-wide pullback, the price dipped to $2,300 before making a modest recovery to around $2,400.
When early holders transfer funds to centralized crypto exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken, market participants often keep a close eye on prices, as these moves can signal an intent to sell tokens into the open market.
Why Are Long-Term Crypto Whales Selling Now?
When investors who held through multiple market cycles suddenly decide to sell, everyday traders often wonder what it means. There are several clear reasons why early holders cash out after holding for a decade:
- Locking in Gains: After achieving multi-thousand-percent returns, securing real-world liquidity is a logical goal for early adopters looking to fund personal lifestyle changes.
- Portfolio Diversification: Holding tens of millions of dollars in a single asset creates concentrated exposure, prompting investors to spread risk into other asset classes.
- Tax Planning & Estate Management: Multi-million-dollar transfers are often structured ahead of tax deadlines or family wealth planning.
What It Means for the Broader Crypto Ecosystem
While large sell transfers can create temporary market volatility, whale profit-taking is a normal feature of maturing financial markets. It redistributes tokens from early insiders to newer market participants.
If broader market demand remains stable and inflows continue, markets can absorb sell pressure over time. However, if macroeconomic conditions tighten or capital flows outward, price dips can extend further. Investors should carefully assess risk tolerance and remember that digital asset prices remain subject to high market volatility.
