Elon Musk Takes On Mukesh Ambani Over Starlink India Launch

Imagine two of the world's richest leaders locking horns over internet access for over a billion people. That is exactly what is happening in India right now.
Tech titan Elon Musk is fighting to launch his Starlink satellite internet service in India. Standing in his path is billionaire Mukesh Ambani, whose telecom giant Reliance Jio already serves over 520 million subscribers.
Musk's Mock Letter to 'Prime Minister Ambani'
The tension flared up on Friday when Musk publicly poked fun at Ambani on social media.
Ambani does not hold any government office. He is the chairman of Reliance Industries and holds an estimated net worth of $86.3 billion on Forbes' latest India rich list.
Despite this, Musk sarcastically addressed him as the prime minister of India in a public post.
"Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?"
Musk added an apology for not realizing sooner that Ambani was the "real boss" holding up Starlink's market entry.
Inside Jio's $10 Billion Plan to Rival Starlink
While Musk pushes for approval, Reliance Jio is quietly preparing its own massive space-based internet system.
Industry reports from Business Today reveal that Jio plans to build a constellation of about 1,600 satellites. Analysts estimate the total price tag will fall between $10 billion and $15 billion.
On paper, Jio's planned network boasts impressive specs compared to Starlink's current Indian approval limits.
- Jio's Targeted Capacity: Up to 5 terabits per second (Tbps) across India.
- Starlink's Approved Capacity: Currently capped at 600 gigabits per second (Gbps), according to Business Standard reports.
- Capacity Ratio: Jio's planned setup targets roughly eight times more bandwidth than Starlink's approved limit.
Comparing the Launch Timelines
Although Jio's technical ambitions are massive, its constellation is still years away from full deployment.
Data from Angel One shows that Jio's satellite arm aims for its first test flight in September 2027. The company does not expect to deploy all 1,600 satellites until 2035.
Interestingly, the two rivals share a commercial connection. Back in March 2025, Jio signed a retail deal to sell Starlink hardware kits once Indian authorities clear the service.
Who Is Actually Holding Starlink Back?
Starlink cleared a major hurdle by securing its official Indian operating licence in June 2025.
However, two final regulatory hurdles remain before satellite internet can reach consumers:
- Security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Official airwave (spectrum) allocation from the government.
Importantly, Jio's own satellite venture is currently stuck at the exact same two regulatory checkpoints.
The Government's Response to Monopoly Accusations
Indian government officials dismissed claims that regulators favor domestic firms over foreign companies.
Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified the state's official position on fair competition, calling complaints of unfair treatment "baseless and misconceived."
"India does not allow a monopoly in any sector."
Ground Infrastructure: Starlink Holds the Early Lead
When looking at physical hardware on the ground, Starlink holds a clear head start over Jio.
Starlink confirms it has already constructed 20 ground gateway stations across India. In contrast, Jio's first orbital test flight remains about 11 months away.
As security reviews continue, both tech giants remain waiting for final government clearance to bring high-speed satellite broadband to millions of Indian homes.
