Deutsche Bank Prepares Institutional Bitcoin Custody

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a digital asset custody service in Germany within a few weeks. This new offering will allow corporate clients to safely store cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether through a regulated banking institution.
At the time of the announcement, Bitcoin was trading around $81,595 (-0.51%), while Ether stood at approximately $2,443 (+0.71%). While major traditional institutions are expanding into digital asset infrastructure, market participants should keep in mind that crypto prices remain subject to ongoing volatility.
Banking Growth Driven by Digital Assets
Deutsche Bank is one of the world's largest financial institutions, holding over $2.2 trillion in assets and operating across 58 countries.
Speaking on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Gerald Podobnik, co-head of corporate banking at Deutsche Bank, explained the strategic vision behind the launch.
He emphasized that offering crypto custody is a key component of the bank's plan to achieve an 8% compound annual growth rate in its corporate banking division by 2028.
Global Expansion and Stablecoin Integration
Germany serves as the initial launchpad for the service, but Deutsche Bank plans to expand its custody platform to key Asian financial centers to attract global corporate clients.
The bank is rolling out its digital asset services in planned stages:
- Phase 1: Initial launch in Germany supporting major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTCBTC-1.28%) and Ether (ETHETH-0.43%).
- Phase 2: Expansion to major financial hubs across Asia.
- Phase 3: Future integration of stablecoins, allowing clients to manage blockchain-based fiat equivalents.
Podobnik pointed to the rapid rise of stablecoins and new liquidity classes as prime examples of how digital assets are transforming modern finance.
Tokenization: A $7 Trillion Market Opportunity
Beyond storing digital coins, Deutsche Bank is preparing to offer broader blockchain financial services. The bank plans to debut tokenized deposits and a dedicated platform to help clients issue blockchain-based securities, including digital bonds.
In its Asset Tokenization 101 research report, Deutsche Bank Research estimated that the market for tokenized real-world assets (RWA) could reach $7 trillion in volume by 2035.
Tokenization involves representing traditional financial assets—such as bonds or commercial deposits—as digital tokens on a blockchain ledger, enabling faster and more transparent settlements.
A Hybrid Future for Global Banking
Deutsche Bank views blockchain technology as a complementary layer that will work alongside existing banking systems rather than replacing them completely.
"I believe that, as the financial system, we will need to offer tokenized or blockchain solutions to our clients as additional services alongside our traditional ones … but not necessarily to replace what we are doing today," declared Gerald Podobnik.
This initiative aligns with other blockchain efforts by the bank. Deutsche Bank is also participating in Project Agorá, a joint initiative led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) alongside Visa, JPMorgan, and UBS. The project is currently conducting real-value tests for tokenized bank payments across borders.
