Crypto PAC Fairshake Pours Millions to Oppose Sherrod Brown

Crypto PAC Fairshake Ramps Up Pressure on Sherrod Brown
The cryptocurrency industry is directing significant financial resources into U.S. political races, and one well-known politician is taking the center stage. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, the crypto-focused Super PAC Fairshake and its affiliate have now spent roughly $46.66 million to oppose Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown.
This massive spending footprint cements the Ohio Senate contest as the crypto industry's most expensive target for the 2026 election cycle.
Breaking Down the $46.66 Million Campaign Spend
An FEC filing signed on October 15 illustrates how quickly political funds are being deployed. Defend American Jobs, an affiliate within the Fairshake network that focuses on Republican-friendly races, disclosed several fresh campaign expenditures:
- A major media ad buy worth $5.2 million opposing Brown.
- A secondary media buy of roughly $1.95 million placed just days later.
- Additional media production costs to support the ad buys.
The same filing showed parallel financial support for Brown's Republican opponent, Jon Husted, who took the seat after being appointed last year. Fairshake had previously signaled plans to spend at least $30 million against Brown, but these latest figures show the PAC has easily exceeded that original estimate.
Why Is Sherrod Brown Such a Key Target for Crypto?
Why is a single Senate seat in Ohio attracting tens of millions of dollars from crypto donors? The main reason comes down to legislative influence in Washington.
Sherrod Brown has long been one of the crypto industry's most prominent critics. While serving as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Brown stalled major market-structure legislation. In the 2024 election cycle, Fairshake spent around $40 million to influence the race where Brown lost his chairmanship, and the group is working to prevent him from regaining a position to block digital asset regulations.
Fairshake Expands Support across the House of Representatives
While Ohio is receiving the largest share of funding, Fairshake is expanding its broader legislative strategy. On October 5, the PAC network announced plans to back 32 House incumbents, including 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats.
The PAC frames itself as a bipartisan organization that supports lawmakers who foster innovation. To launch its House initiative, Fairshake committed an initial $6 million, delivering $1 million each to six key candidates:
- Republicans: French Hill, Bill Huizenga, and Bryan Steil.
- Democrats: Janelle Bynum, Steven Horsford, and Derek Tran.
All 32 of the endorsed House candidates previously voted to pass the Clarity Act when it moved through the House in July 2025.
Who Is Funding the Crypto Industry's War Chest?
Fairshake's multi-million-dollar push is funded by major crypto companies and investment firms, including Coinbase, RippleXRP-1.03%, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
Fairshake entered September with approximately $120 million in cash reserves and is expected to spend over $100 million total across both House and Senate contests this cycle. In addition, the Coinbase-backed advocacy group Stand With Crypto is running its own parallel campaign with a separate slate of midterm endorsements.
After the Clarity Act stalled in the Senate, crypto political action committees have committed significant resources toward electing a Congress that will establish structured regulations for digital assets.
