Crypto Bets Hit $2.7B Record on Kalshi and Polymarket

A Record-Breaking Week for Crypto Prediction Markets
Prediction platforms just hit a massive milestone. During the third week of October 2026, crypto-related prediction contracts on Kalshi and Polymarket reached a record $2.7 billion in weekly notional volume. That huge spike pushed crypto into second place overall on both platforms, trailing only sports betting.
This activity was largely driven by short-term trading around BitcoinBTC-1.49%'s price movements. Throughout the week, Bitcoin bounced within a narrow price channel between $80,000 and $84,000. While steady price channels can feel quiet for long-term investors, they create quick trading opportunities for short-term prediction traders. Past performance of digital assets is no guarantee of future results.
The Massive Rise of 15-Minute Micro-Bets
A quick look at the data shows that ultra-short-term contracts are doing most of the heavy lifting. Specifically, 15-minute price markets have quickly captured the vast majority of user interest.
The growth figures on Kalshi illustrate how rapidly this format caught on:
- Between September 1 and September 28, Kalshi generated roughly $8.17 billion in total crypto trading volume.
- About $7 billion—or 86% of that volume—came directly from 15-minute contract markets.
- Crypto's total share of Kalshi's platform volume jumped from 2.6% before launching short formats up to 14.5% in September.
Polymarket experienced a similar wave of activity on its U.S. platform. During the first full week of its 15-minute Bitcoin contracts (September 23 to September 29), trading volume touched $91.76 million.
Across that same short stretch, Polymarket's daily trading volume scaled from $2.40 million up to $27.71 million, while recorded transactions grew from 63,650 to 739,034. For many retail traders, these short-dated contracts function as a simpler version of leveraged trading. They allow participants to wager on price directions with capped upside and downside risks, eliminating the risk of unexpected margin liquidations.
How Major Exchanges and Wallets Are Expanding Access
Getting everyday users onto prediction platforms requires seamless access, and major crypto companies are leading the charge.
Coinbase offers prediction contract features powered by Kalshi's back-end setup. Meanwhile, popular self-custody wallet provider Phantom started a phased rollout of integrated prediction markets for U.S. users.
Phantom's contract structure includes the following key details:
- Contracts cost $0.02 each, which is split evenly between Phantom and Kalshi.
- Traders also pay a standard, low network transaction fee.
- Trades are settled directly on Kalshi, meaning balances stay on Kalshi rather than appearing inside the Phantom wallet balance.
A recent Bloomberg analysis suggested that exchanges and wallet providers are pushing prediction products to offset lower spot trading volumes. These interactive tools offer companies a fresh way to keep retail traders active on their platforms.
Are Traders Betting Big on $100K Bitcoin?
Although trading volume is setting new records, fast-paced 15-minute bets reflect short-term momentum rather than long-term market sentiment.
Longer-dated option contracts show a more cautious picture. On options platform Derive, the implied probability of Bitcoin reaching $100,000 by Christmas nudged up from 9.7% to 12%. However, that modest increase happened during a week when spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $635.6 million in net daily outflows on Thursday alone.
Price projections remain heavily dependent on market conditions. If institutional inflows return to spot ETFs and broader economic factors stay favorable, Bitcoin could test higher price milestones. Conversely, if ETF capital continues to leave or interest rates stay high, Bitcoin's price could face downward pressure or continue trading sideways. In fact, several market analysts told Bitcoin.com News that they do not expect Bitcoin to cross $100,000 before the end of 2026.
Regulatory Challenges and Federal Scrutiny
Despite strong trading numbers, regulatory and legal challenges could create headwinds for the prediction market sector.
Bloomberg noted that ongoing state-level legal battles over sports prediction contracts could cause exchanges to take a more cautious stance on expanding prediction features further into crypto.
Federal agencies are also watching closely. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently implemented a ban preventing U.S. military personnel and Department of Defense employees from trading on Kalshi and Polymarket using nonpublic information. The decision followed a headline-grabbing $400,000 insider trading scandal on prediction markets.
Political views on prediction platforms remain mixed. Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds voiced a combination of optimism about innovation and caution regarding retail investor safeguards. For now, public demand for fast-paced prediction contracts continues to move forward quickly.
