Chamath Palihapitiya Warns AI Could Send Bitcoin to Zero

A Dramatic Reversal on Bitcoin's Future
Chamath Palihapitiya once famously called Bitcoin gold 2.0 and suggested its price could eventually reach $1 million per coin. Now, the prominent venture capitalist has made a complete sharp turn in his long-term outlook.
He warns that artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually hack the network and send Bitcoin's value straight down to zero. While this forecast has stirred fresh debate in the crypto community, it fits into a broader pattern of investment pivots throughout his career.
Why Chamath Thinks AI Will Break Bitcoin
Speaking on Episode 304 of Peter Diamandis' Moonshots podcast, Chamath outlined his bearish thesis on Bitcoin [BTCBTC-1.78%]. He believes the asset has reached a valuation ceiling and will face technical failure.
I just think it's capped, and then I think eventually it gets hacked, and then it goes to zero.
His reasoning centers around three primary factors:
- Limited Fungibility: Concerns over transaction tracing and asset mixing.
- Lack of Privacy: A public ledger that limits sovereign institutional adoption.
- AI CyberCYBER-8.22% Threats: The potential for superintelligent AI systems to crack underlying security.
Chamath argued that central banks cannot adopt Bitcoin as a primary reserve asset because sovereign entities require strong privacy protections. Without massive central bank buying power, he believes Bitcoin faces a natural cap on its market capitalization.
His most extreme scenario involves an advanced AI cracking Bitcoin's cryptography or compromising Satoshi Nakamoto's dormant wallets. He suggested an attacker could steal those coins, open a short position on Bitcoin, and announce the breach to profit twice from market panic.
Governance Hurdles and Cryptographic Reality
Chamath added that upgrading Bitcoin to quantum-resistant cryptography is basically impossible due to its slow, consensus-driven governance model. However, developers and computer scientists emphasize that these threat scenarios remain purely hypothetical.
Bitcoin uses SHA-256 hashing for block verification and public-key cryptography for wallet signatures. No protocol breach of this nature has ever occurred on the live network.
While technological threats must be monitored, crypto assets are volatile and subject to shifting market conditions. Past returns of digital assets or historical investment performance do not guarantee future results. You can review real-time pricing and historical data directly on Bitkub Market.
From Bitcoin Evangelist to Multibillion-Dollar Regrets
This new outlook marks a stark departure from Chamath's early days as a crypto advocate. He began buying Bitcoin around 2012 and 2013, acquiring coins at prices between $80 and $100.
During that era, he famously urged everyday investors to put 1% of their net worth into Bitcoin as schmuck insurance against financial system instability. By 2017, he predicted prices would reach $100,000 and eventually $1 million. In January 2021, he reiterated a target of $200,000 within five to ten years.
These price projections were framed under assumptions of uninterrupted global institutional adoption. If adoption stalls or macro conditions shift, crypto asset prices can experience severe downward corrections instead.
Despite those bullish statements, Chamath sold large portions of his holdings over time. In 2014, he spent 2,739 BTC (worth $1.6 million then) to buy land in Lake Tahoe. On a November 2024 episode of the All-In podcast, he admitted that selling early was a $3 or $4 billion mistake.
He confirmed he no longer holds Bitcoin directly, having exchanged his spot exposure for equity in Digital Currency Group (DCG) to eliminate personal self-custody risks.
A History of Reversals: Tesla and SPACs
Chamath's changing perspective on Bitcoin aligns with similar pivots in his investing history. His past public positions on major equities and investment structures have shifted significantly over time.
The Tesla Position
In January 2021, Chamath publicly praised Tesla on major financial news outlets, suggesting its share price could double or triple. By September 2021, he revealed he had quietly sold his entire Tesla position over the previous year while continuing to speak positively about the company.
The SPAC Empire
Chamath earned the moniker SPAC King by promoting Special Purpose Acquisition Companies as a better way for private firms to go public. He launched high-profile deals including Virgin Galactic, Clover Health, Opendoor, and SoFi.
He sold roughly $213 million of his personal Virgin Galactic stock in early 2021 before many SPAC share prices suffered steep declines. He later acknowledged structural flaws in the model:
SPAC incentives were totally and fundamentally misaligned because I could do a deal and still get paid. It was a blemish on my track record, and I'm gonna fix it.
Mind Change or Strategic Adaptability?
Chamath has frequently defended his decisions by stating that he reserves the right to change his mind as market facts evolve. Portfolio rebalancing, risk management, and liquidity needs are common reasons investors alter their positions.
However, his transition from hailing Bitcoin as financial insurance to predicting its collapse highlights the changing nature of market commentary. For retail investors, high-profile forecasts should be weighed carefully alongside personal risk tolerance and sound research.
