Brazil's B3 Targets Tokenized Stock Trading for 2027

Bridging Traditional Stocks and Blockchain
Brazil’s largest stock market, B3, is preparing a major technology upgrade. The exchange plans to introduce a platform for tokenized assets in the first half of 2027.
This updated schedule pushes back an earlier launch estimate of late 2026. However, B3 remains focused on integrating digital assets into its core market structure.
How the Tokenized Trading System Works
The new infrastructure will allow investors to trade tokenized securities alongside standard equities. These tokens will not be issued natively on a blockchain.
Instead, they will act as digital tokens linked to existing traditional stocks. This structure ensures that both formats share identical prices, order books, and liquidity.
Regulatory Limits on 24/7 Trading and Settlement
While tokenization modernizes asset tracking, it will not bring instant settlements or 24/7 trading immediately. Existing regulations mean trades must still settle on a standard two-business-day timeline (D+2).
Humberto Costa, B3’s director of products and counter strategy, explained the framework during an event in São Paulo.
“The initial objective is for you to be able to tokenize the share, deliver it to the investor’s hand, and for them to be able to trade on the same book, at the same time.”
Costa noted that features like continuous trading and instant settlement require broader regulatory approvals from Brazilian authorities.
“Today, I cannot liquidate in an environment other than the environment I have today, which liquidates in D+2. I am not authorized today to do a sale in a different format.”
Stablecoins, ETFs, and Central Bank Approval
B3 is currently evaluating whether to include Brazilian Depositary Receipts (BDRs)—which represent foreign stocks—and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) in the new system.
In addition, the exchange intends to launch its own stablecoin. It has not confirmed whether the stablecoin will integrate with tokenized stock trading at launch.
To move forward with these plans, B3 will request official authorization from the Central Bank of Brazil to operate and custody digital assets.
Expanding Into BitcoinBTC+0.79% Event Contracts
Alongside its tokenization plans, B3 is expanding its derivative offerings by launching six 'Event Contracts.' These instruments include contracts tied to Bitcoin price movements.
This product rollout comes as Brazilian regulators tighten rules on foreign prediction platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi.
Past performance of digital assets is not an indication of future performance. Investors should remain aware of market volatility and regulatory changes.
