BlackRock Files for New Bitcoin Protection ETF (PBIT)

What Is BlackRock's New Bitcoin ETF Proposal?
Imagine wanting to invest in Bitcoin without worrying as much about steep price crashes. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, wants to make that easier for everyday investors.
On October 19, 2026, BlackRock submitted a registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The filing details a proposed fund named the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, which plans to trade under the ticker symbol PBIT.
Unlike standard spot Bitcoin ETFs that buy cryptocurrency directly, PBIT will not hold actual Bitcoin. Instead, it uses options contracts and fixed-income assets to cushion downside risk.
How the Downside Protection Strategy Works
The main idea behind PBIT is straightforward: you give up some potential upside in exchange for protection when prices drop. It is a classic trade-off built for cautious investors.
To achieve this, the ETF relies on three overlapping sets of options contracts called tranches. These tranches start in different months to spread out market exposure.
Each tranche combines purchased and sold call options tied to a reference asset, such as the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). By setting strike prices roughly 10% below the reference asset's starting value, the strategy aims to limit initial losses to about 10% before expenses.
However, BlackRock makes it clear that this initial 10% target is not a guaranteed safety net. Shareholders could still lose some or all of their investment depending on market timing and extreme price swings.
Using Options and Fixed Income to Shield Investors
The proposed fund plans to use Flexible Exchange Options (FLEX Options). These are customizable exchange-traded contracts that allow fund managers to adjust positions as markets shift.
Selling call options generates cash to pay for downside protection. But it also caps maximum returns during major Bitcoin rallies. As a result, PBIT will likely lag behind Bitcoin when the market climbs quickly.
To strengthen the strategy, PBIT will also hold conservative fixed-income assets, including:
- Cash and money market funds
- Short-term government obligations
- Investment-grade fixed-income securities
Interest earned from these investments helps cover options costs and provides an extra buffer against market drops.
Comparing BlackRock's Growing Family of Bitcoin Funds
BlackRock continues to expand its crypto-linked products to fit different investment strategies. Here is how PBIT compares to its existing funds:
- iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT): A direct spot Bitcoin ETF holding real BTCBTC-0.62%. It reached approximately $65.34 billion in net assets as of October 16, 2026.
- iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA): Launched on June 16, 2026, this fund sells covered calls to generate regular income for investors.
- iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT): The latest proposal focused specifically on buffering against downside losses.

What Comes Next in the SEC Approval Process?
PBIT is currently moving through the standard regulatory review process. The filing suggests the amendment could become effective 75 days after its October 19 submission date.
BlackRock Fund Advisors will manage the proposed ETF. Under its rules, at least 80% of net assets will be dedicated to Bitcoin exposure and its protection framework.
The management fee has not been announced yet. Expenses will reduce overall returns, and investors should note risks related to options liquidity, interest rate shifts, and counterparty defaults.
