Bitcoin Price Drops Below $80K as Liquidations Surge

A Surprising Weekend Drop for Bitcoin
Crypto weekends are usually quiet with low trading volumes. However, this weekend brought a sudden turn of events as Bitcoin (BTCBTC-2.54%) dropped below $80,000 for the second time in about ten days.
The primary cryptocurrency dipped to a 9-day low of $79,750 before finding some immediate support. While sharp price swings can draw strong market interest, short-term crypto prices remain highly volatile and can move rapidly in either direction.
How Bitcoin Moved From $85,000 to Below $80,000
Just a few days earlier on Wednesday, Bitcoin was riding high, climbing close to $85,000 for the first time in about two weeks.
However, sellers quickly stepped in to halt the upward move. Over the following 24 to 36 hours, Bitcoin pulled back toward $81,000.
It managed to hold between $81,000 and $82,000 on Friday. But downward momentum resumed on Saturday, causing Bitcoin to fall back below the $80,000 line.
What Are Liquidations and Why Did $670 Million Disappear?
When traders use borrowed funds (leverage) to open larger trading positions, exchanges require collateral. If the market moves against those trades past a certain point, the platform automatically sells the assets to cover potential losses. This automatic event is called a liquidation.
Think of leverage like taking out a mortgage with a very tiny down payment. If the property's market value drops sharply, the lender might sell the property immediately to pay off the loan balance.
Data from tracking service CoinGlass shows that daily market liquidations skyrocketed to $670 million. In recent hours alone, $232 million was wiped out, with $220 million coming from long positions—bets that prices would go up.
More than 213,000 traders were wiped out over the past day. The single largest liquidation happened on Binance, involving a trade worth almost $12 million.
Altcoins Suffer Drop Across the Board
When Bitcoin undergoes a pullback, alternative cryptocurrencies often experience even stronger selling pressure. Major altcoins moved lower during the same timeframe.
- EthereumETH-4.53% dropped below $2,350.
- BNBBNB-3.96% fell under $730.
- XRP confirmed its move below $1.30.
- SolanaSOL-5.22% slipped below $100 for the first time in a while.
Other tokens recorded even larger losses. Zcash (ZEC) fell sharply by 7.5%, while NEAR ProtocolNEAR-10.77% tanked by over 10%.
Understanding Market Volatility and Risk
Events like market liquidations demonstrate why managing risk is essential when participating in digital asset markets. While leverage can increase exposure, it significantly multiplies potential losses when prices turn.
