Bitcoin Miners Riot and Hut 8 Sell $1B in BTC Treasury

Major Bitcoin Miners Sell Off Large Holdings
Two of the largest public Bitcoin mining companies, Riot Platforms and Hut 8, disclosed major treasury changes in their third-quarter earnings reports. Both firms liquidated significant portions of their Bitcoin reserves during the quarter. Combined sales across recent months reached approximately $1 billion as the companies reallocate capital toward artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and stock repurchases.
Riot Platforms led the sell-off by unloading over 10,000 BTCBTC+2.86% during the third quarter. Meanwhile, Hut 8 sold more than 3,100 BTC across the third quarter and October. These moves highlight changing strategies among corporate miners seeking to diversify revenue sources beyond block rewards.
Why Are Miners Liquidating Their Bitcoin?
Mining firms regularly adjust how they manage their digital asset balance sheets. Instead of holding all mined Bitcoin in corporate treasuries, some operators choose to convert holdings into cash to fund physical infrastructure and operational expansion.
Riot Platforms is directing its sales proceeds directly into high-performance computing and AI data centers. Hut 8 is taking a different route, using its crypto proceeds primarily to fund stock buybacks and return capital to its shareholders.
Riot Platforms: Shifting Capital to AI Data Centers
Riot Platforms significantly reduced its Bitcoin holdings during 2026. For the quarter ended September 30, Riot sold 10,599 BTC for approximately $751.5 million. This represents over half of all the Bitcoin the company has sold this year.
Through the first nine months of 2026, Riot generated nearly $1.5 billion by selling a total of 20,264 BTC. Its sales pace accelerated rapidly throughout the year:
- First Quarter 2026: Sold 3,778 BTC for $289.5 million
- Second Quarter 2026: Sold 5,887 BTC for approximately $443 million
- Third Quarter 2026: Sold 10,599 BTC for $751.5 million
As a result of these sales, Riot's overall Bitcoin treasury shrank from 18,005 BTC at the beginning of the year down to 2,418 BTC by the end of September.
Riot's Q3 Financial Overview
Riot generated $181.4 million in Q3 revenue, up 1% from $180.2 million in the same period last year. Its operational revenue breakdown showed notable shifts across business units:
- Bitcoin mining revenue: Decreased to $116 million from $160.8 million, despite a 16% rise in production to 1,637 BTC.
- Data center revenue: Reached $18.4 million.
- Engineering revenue: Grew to $47 million.
Net income for the third quarter came in at approximately $4 million, compared to $104.5 million in Q3 of the prior year. Riot closed September with $950.2 million in cash and Bitcoin combined, and reported that it did not raise any equity capital during 2026.
Riot's AI Deal and Ongoing Sales Strategy
A key driver of Riot's strategy is its expansion into high-performance computing. The firm finalized a 15-year lease for 910 megawatts of computing capacity at its facility in Corsicana, Texas. That contract is valued at roughly $28 billion over its initial term.
Taking into account existing agreements, Riot holds approximately $38 billion in total contracted data center revenue. The company stated in its quarterly filing that it plans to sell substantially all newly mined Bitcoin moving forward to pay for development and operational costs rather than maintaining a large crypto treasury.
Hut 8: Capital Returns and Portfolio Growth
Hut 8 took a distinct path with its sales. During the third quarter, the firm sold about 954 BTC for $74.8 million to finance stock repurchases. It followed up in October by selling another 2,148 BTC for $175.4 million.
Across both periods, Hut 8 sold a combined 3,102 BTC to raise approximately $250.2 million. Unlike Riot, Hut 8 did not execute comparable cash sales during the first two quarters of 2026, when its asset activity primarily involved acquiring Bitcoin or transferring funds to clear equipment obligations.
Hut 8's Financial Results and Treasury Status
Hut 8 reported Q3 revenue of $71.1 million, down from $83.5 million a year earlier. Net income attributable to the firm rose to $131.1 million, up from $50.1 million in Q3 of the previous year. This earnings growth was helped by a noncash gain related to higher asset valuations.
Despite its recent liquidations, Hut 8 maintains a substantial reserve. At the end of September, the company held 16,787 BTC valued at roughly $1.4 billion across its operations. This includes holdings linked to its majority-owned subsidiary, American Bitcoin, which receives support from the Trump family.
Hut 8's Infrastructure and Financial Moves
Hut 8 also highlighted operational progress, including commercial efforts at its Beacon Point campus and ongoing development talks covering 1,300 megawatts of energy capacity. Following the quarter's end, the firm secured a $1.07 billion revolving credit facility and expanded its stock repurchase program to $1 billion.
Stock Market Reaction
Wall Street responded in contrasting ways to the two earnings reports:
- Riot Platforms (RIOT): Shares climbed over 12% to trade around $15.75.
- Hut 8 (HUT): Shares dropped more than 21% to trade around $50.06.
As public miners rebalance their asset reserves and enter new sectors like AI, investors continue to weigh individual corporate strategies. Past performance of digital assets or corporate operations does not guarantee future results.
