Bitcoin Faces Key Test Against US Treasury Bonds

Bitcoin vs US Treasury Bonds: A Strategic Comparison
Bloomberg Intelligence senior commodity strategist Mike McGlone has highlighted a potential turning point for Bitcoin (BTCBTC+1.16%) when evaluated alongside traditional US Treasury bonds.
In a social media update, McGlone noted that Bitcoin's relative performance against US government bonds could have broader implications across multiple asset classes.
Analyzing the Relative Performance: IBIT vs TLT
To illustrate this trend, McGlone evaluated the performance ratio between BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT).
Using a baseline index value of 100 set at the end of 2024, the IBIT/TLT ratio stood at 81 as of October 30.
This data indicates that the Bitcoin ETF underperformed the long-term Treasury bond ETF by approximately 19% on a normalized relative basis during this timeframe.
The strategist also observed that the IBIT/TLT ratio has struggled to sustain levels above the baseline 100 mark since the fourth quarter of 2025.
Understanding Risk and Volatility Differences
Volatility measures how significantly an asset's price fluctuates over a specific period.
McGlone noted that IBIT exhibits roughly four times the price volatility of TLT.
In general market analysis, higher price swings are often expected to align with higher relative returns. Because long-term Treasury bonds have shown stronger relative stability during this period despite lower volatility, analysts consider the ratio trend notable.
The $80,000 Threshold and Potential Market Dynamics
According to McGlone, $80,000 serves as an important benchmark level for Bitcoin.
His perspective indicates that if Bitcoin remains below $80,000 in an environment of tight macroeconomic policy, relative underperformance against bonds could persist.
Conversely, if broader market conditions shift—such as potential changes in interest rate policies or increased institutional adoption—Bitcoin's relative trajectory could experience renewed momentum. Market movements remain dependent on broader economic developments.
Contextualizing Recent Market Milestones
The year 2024 represented a landmark period for the cryptocurrency sector, characterized by the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States and shifts in political commentary, including former President Donald Trump's vocal backing of digital assets.
Despite these major catalysts, relative comparative metrics show that long-term Treasury bonds have held their ground against Bitcoin over the subsequent period.
Investors often monitor comparative metrics like the IBIT/TLT ratio to evaluate risk appetite across traditional finance and digital asset markets.
