Bitcoin Drops Below $80K as Massive Liquidations Hit

What Caused Bitcoin to Drop Below $80,000?
Bitcoin slipped below the $80,000 price level on Saturday after a sudden market squeeze wiped out more than $200 million worth of crypto positions in just 60 minutes.
Traders betting on prices to rise absorbed almost all of the damage. Out of that one-hour liquidation total, bullish long positions accounted for $191.33 million.
The price decline was not limited to Bitcoin. EthereumETH-3.62% and other altcoins drifted lower as well, pushing total crypto market capitalization down 4.06% over 24 hours to $2.72 trillion.
While fast price shifts create headlines, digital asset markets remain inherently volatile, and price trends can adjust quickly depending on liquidity and overall economic conditions.
Understanding Leverage and Market Liquidations
To understand why prices fell so fast, it helps to look at how leverage works in crypto trading.
Think of leverage like taking out a loan to buy a bigger house than you could afford with cash alone. If the property value falls too low, the bank requires extra money to cover the gap.
In crypto trading, leverage lets investors use borrowed funds to increase trade sizes. If prices move in the wrong direction, exchanges automatically close those trades to prevent further losses—an event called liquidation.
When hundreds of millions of dollars in positions are liquidated at once, automated sell orders flood the market. On weekends, when trading activity is lighter, this forced selling can push prices down rapidly.
The 24-Hour Breakdown: $837 Million Liquidation Wave
The rapid one-hour drop was part of a larger 24-hour liquidation cycle. Data from Coinglass shows that liquidations reached $837.12 million across 227,681 individual traders over the full day.
- Long Positions Hit Hardest: Traders expecting prices to rise lost $693.05 million, representing 82.8% of all liquidations.
- Short Positions Liquidated: Traders betting against the market lost $144.07 million.
- Bitcoin Lead: BTCBTC-2.03% positions accounted for $232.55 million in total liquidations, with over 93% coming from long trades.
- Ethereum Follows: ETH positions saw $181.51 million liquidated, with long trades also exceeding 93% of that total.
The single largest liquidation happened on Binance, where a trader holding an $11.85 million long position on the ETH/USDT pair was liquidated as prices pulled back.
How Major Crypto Assets Handled the Pullback
At press time, Bitcoin traded at $79,464, down 2.48% over 24 hours. This marked its lowest price point since September 18.
Altcoins experienced larger percentage drops over the same 24-hour period:
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell 4.71% to $2,288.73, hitting its lowest level in about two months.
- SolanaSOL-4.01%: Dropped 5.20% to settle around $98.92.
- Zcash (ZEC): Saw the largest drop among top assets, sliding 8.39% to $1,124.36.

Why $80,000 Matters for Corporate Balance Sheets
The drop below $80,000 carries additional meaning for public and private companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets.
Estimates from Glassnode indicate that $80,000 is the average price companies paid per coin across institutional treasuries.
With prices trading below that threshold, average corporate holdings are currently sitting at an unrealized loss. While institutional holders often keep long-term horizons, falling below aggregate purchase prices can impact overall market confidence.
Technical Chart Support Levels and Market Scenarios
Market analysts are evaluating specific technical levels to determine potential future price paths.
Weekend liquidations tend to amplify market moves, but key support levels often dictate whether prices stabilize or continue testing lower bounds.
Analyst Benjamin Cowen noted that if Bitcoin closes the week below $83,000 on October 25, it would support a continuing bearish path. However, if Bitcoin recovers above $83,000 and holds that level, that negative projection becomes invalid.
Technical analysis points to $77,876 as the immediate lower support boundary. If selling pressure pushes prices below that point, an additional support zone lies between $76,700 and $72,500.
The market has tested similar territory recently. On October 8, total market capitalization touched $2.69 trillion before recovering. The current valuation of $2.72 trillion stands roughly 1% above that floor.
Macroeconomic Events and Inflation Data Ahead
External economic developments could play a significant role in where crypto prices head next week.
Market observer Ted pointed out on social media that Bitcoin and Ethereum experienced selling pressure during an illiquid weekend, prompting questions about whether markets are anticipating upcoming economic headlines.
Key macro events to watch include:
- Federal Reserve Meeting: The U.S. Federal Reserve convenes on October 27 and 28 to decide on interest rates.
- PCE Inflation Index: September Personal Consumption Expenditures data arrives on October 29.
- Oil Prices: Brent crude settled at $116.72 on Friday, a level that could keep broader inflation elevated.
If inflation figures remain higher than expected or central bank policy remains strict, risk assets could face continued pressure. Conversely, if economic conditions ease, buying support around key technical zones may help steady the market.
