Bitcoin Dominance Hits 60% as Altcoins Fall Ahead of CPI

Bitcoin Holds Tight While Altcoins Pull Back
Think of the crypto market like a busy neighborhood. Right now, Bitcoin (BTCBTC-0.69%) is standing firmly in place, while smaller digital assets are taking a step backward.
Bitcoin's market dominance has climbed to 60% on CoinMarketCap. That means 60 cents out of every dollar invested in the entire crypto market is currently held in Bitcoin.
This shift comes as traders eagerly wait for the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. Uncertainty around economic numbers often makes investors cautious.
Tracing Bitcoin's Recent Price Path
Bitcoin has been on a bumpy ride over the past week. Let us look at how prices moved step by step.
At the start of last week, Bitcoin tried twice to break past $87,000. Both attempts failed as sellers entered the market.
The second rejection triggered a noticeable sell-off. By Thursday evening, Bitcoin dropped down to $80,400, touching a multi-week low after losing nearly $7,000 in 72 hours.
Buyers stepped back in over the weekend. Bitcoin bounced up to $83,000 and held steady there for roughly 36 hours.
On Monday morning, Bitcoin pushed up to test $84,400. However, sellers regained control on Tuesday morning, pushing the asset back down under $81,000.
Signs of Stability Amid Price Swings
Despite that Tuesday drop, two encouraging details stood out for chart watchers.
First, Bitcoin recovered quickly to get back above $83,000. Second, it set a higher low by staying above its previous $80,400 mark.
Technical traders often interpret a higher low as a sign of underlying strength. However, price charts alone cannot predict future trends, and rapid price drops remain possible.
Bitcoin has since been trading sideways between $83,000 and $84,000, floating near the lower end of that range with a total market cap of $1.670 trillion.
Why the CPI Inflation Data Matters
Market volatility is expected to pick up following the release of the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures.
CPI measures inflation in the United States. If inflation comes in higher than central bank targets, interest rates may remain elevated, which typically dampens appetite for high-risk assets like crypto.
If inflation cooling speeds up, central banks could lower borrowing costs over time. That scenario generally creates a more supportive backdrop for crypto markets.
Altcoins Face Widespread Losses
While Bitcoin stays relatively flat, most major altcoins are trading in the red. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization decreased by 0.5% down to $2.790 trillion.
Here is how key altcoins are performing across the market:
- EthereumETH-1.24% slipped down near the $2,500 mark.
- Ripple (XRP) moved further away from $1.40.
- SolanaSOL-1.55% pulled back to around $107.
- RAIN tumbled nearly 10% in daily trading.
- Quant (QNT) dropped by 7.5%.
- TIA, M, CRV, and RENDER dropped between 8% and 10% over 24 hours.
- CardanoADA-1.59%, HYPE, Chainlink (LINK), Stellar (XLM), Near Protocol (NEAR), Bittensor (TAO), and Polkadot (DOT) all posted noticeable declines.
Bucking the Trend: A Few Green Performers
A small group of tokens managed to post positive numbers despite the broader pullbacks.
Tokens like Zcash (ZEC), Monero (XMR), TRON (TRX), and Bitcoin Cash (BCHBCH+2.79%) recorded modest daily gains.
Bitget Token (BTW) staged a dramatic rally, soaring 47% to pass $2.60 — though extreme price surges in individual tokens often carry heightened volatility and sudden pullbacks.
Understanding Market Dominance and Risk
Bitcoin dominance increases when traders seek relative stability within the crypto market during uncertain macroeconomic moments.
Because smaller altcoins often experience steeper price swings, investors frequently shift capital into Bitcoin or cash when major economic news approaches.
