Bitcoin Bounces Above $82K After Sudden Inflation Dip

A Rollercoaster 24 Hours for BitcoinBTC+0.64%
Bitcoin had a wild ride over the past 24 hours. The world's largest cryptocurrency briefly dropped below $80,000 before making a fast comeback above $82,000.
At its lowest point during early morning trading, Bitcoin touched an intraday low of $79,694. However, buyers stepped in quickly, pushing the price up to $82,520 before it settled around $82,300.
Despite these sharp price swings, Bitcoin ended the period roughly flat, up about 0.67% over 24 hours. Meanwhile, EthereumETH+0.42% traded around $2,443, up 0.25%. Bitcoin's total market capitalization held steady at nearly $1.65 trillion.
What Caused the Sudden Crypto Drop?
The market turbulence started right after the release of the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September. The report showed higher-than-expected inflation numbers.
Before the news broke, Bitcoin was trading near $84,000. Selling pressure immediately picked up after the announcement, pulling the price down to $82,700.
By Wednesday evening, Bitcoin slipped past its key $82,000 support level. Around midnight, the price dropped below $80,200 as investors processed what higher inflation could mean for interest rates.
For the next six hours, buyers and sellers fought for control. Bitcoin bounced in a tight window between $80,500 and $81,500 before a second wave of selling pushed it down to $79,694.
Inflation, Oil Prices, and the Federal Reserve
Why did the inflation report shake up crypto markets? When inflation stays high, central banks usually keep interest rates higher for longer.
Market analysts at Bitunix noted that rising oil prices were a key driver behind the inflation bump. However, price increases spread into other sectors as well.
Because inflation remains persistent, market-implied odds of an October Federal Reserve rate hike briefly jumped back up to nearly 50%. Higher interest rates often make riskier assets less appealing in the short term.
Over $900 Million in Traders' Positions Wiped Out
The sudden price swings hit leveraged traders hard. Data from Coinglass showed significant liquidations across the broader crypto market over the 24-hour period.
Here is a breakdown of the market liquidation data:
- Total Market Liquidations: Over $929 million in total leveraged positions were wiped out.
- Bullish Long Positions: Over $777 million of the total liquidations came from traders betting on price increases.
- Bitcoin Longs: Bitcoin traders lost about $172 million in long positions.
- Bitcoin Shorts: In comparison, traders shorting Bitcoin lost only $42 million when the price suddenly bounced back.
This massive difference highlights how fast sudden market drops can punish over-leveraged traders.
What Could Happen Next for Bitcoin?
Analysts are watching closely to see if inflation pressures stick around and how central banks react. Bitunix analysts highlighted two primary paths forward:
- Downside Risk Scenario: If U.S. Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar continue to rise, crypto prices could face ongoing downward pressure from market deleveraging.
- Potential Upside Scenario: If interest rate concerns ease, Bitcoin could attempt to test higher liquidation zones, provided the market maintains a healthier balance of leverage.
This crypto pullback occurred alongside a broader stock market dip, where Bitcoin temporarily hovered near $81,200 after hitting a low of $80,154.
Investors should keep in mind that crypto assets remain subject to high market volatility. Past performance of digital assets is not an indication of future results.
