Arthur Hayes Sells $22M Crypto to Sidestep Market Risk

Arthur Hayes Steps Back From Crypto Markets
Arthur Hayes has sold roughly $22.28 million in digital assets from Maelstrom's directional book. The family office's chief investment officer shared his decision on X, explaining that he plans to sit out the market until conditions clear up.
This sudden exit marks a swift change in tone. Just days earlier on October 15, Hayes encouraged traders to go long on Bitcoin (BTCBTC-1.36%) and EthereumETH-1.70%, expecting a potential bailout to eventually lift markets.
Breakdown of the $22 Million Crypto Dump
Blockchain tracking data from Lookonchain revealed details of Hayes' recent transactions. His largest single sale was 6,400 ETH, valued at approximately $15.2 million.
He also liquidated several altcoins from the portfolio:
- 14 million Ethena (ENA) worth $2.76 million
- 323,000 UniswapUNI-4.48% worth $2.24 million
- 1.89 million Ether.fi (ETHFI)
- Stakes in AerodromeAERO-6.00% Finance (AERO), Pendle (PENDLE), and Zama (ZAMA)
Hayes confirmed the sales publicly, pointing to mounting global uncertainties as his main motivation.
I dumped it all. The Maelstrom directional book, took profits on $ETH, $ENAENA-6.76%, $UNI and other shitcoins. I think we gotta go down to go up. It looks a bit dicey out there in macro and geopolitical land. Going to sit on the sidelines and wait for the all clear signal âĶ Brrrrr
Profit, Loss, and Strategic Timing
Did Hayes lock in profits on these trades? The outcomes appear mixed across his portfolio.
Lookonchain estimated his 6,400 ETH sale at around $2,375 per coin. While his initial purchase price for ETH remains private, ENA provides a clearer picture. In early August, he purchased 9.05 million ENA for about $773,000 (roughly $0.085 per token). Selling near $0.20 per token reflects a notable gain, though it is unconfirmed if these were the exact same tokens.
Conversely, his newer short-term trades saw small losses. On October 15, Lookonchain reported Hayes bought 546,610 AERO ($460,000), 120,000 PENDLE ($232,000), and 3 million ZAMA ($197,000). Purchased for $889,000 total and sold for about $856,000, these positions generated a combined loss of roughly $33,000.
Broader Market Pressure and Price Targets
Hayes' exit took place during a wider market downturn. Six of the seven tokens he sold posted monthly losses according to BeInCrypto Markets data.
This market slump contrasts with Hayes' earlier price projections. In September, he suggested ETH could reach $10,000, ENA $0.50, and ETHFI $2. These estimates were grounded in assumptions of massive liquidity injections and rate cuts. However, under current market conditions and tight central bank policies, prices remain far lower, and assets face continuing downside risks if economic pressures persist.
Market pressure deepened throughout October. On October 15, crypto liquidations reached $942.1 million in 24 hours, with long positions making up 91.6% of the total. On October 23, macro stress led the Nasdaq down 2.6% and pushed Bitcoin toward $81,400 as rising oil prices renewed inflation fears.
Federal Reserve Outlook and Market Signals
Investors are closely monitoring the Federal Reserve's rate decision on October 28. On September 16, the Fed raised interest rates to 3.75%â4%, marking its first increase since July 2023. CME FedWatch data indicates a 90% probability that rates will remain unchanged.
Minutes from the Fed's September meeting showed most officials anticipated another rate hike before year-end. In contrast, Hayes argues that an eventual artificial intelligence bailout will force central banks to print money, creating fresh market liquidity.
Investors watching Hayes' moves should remember that timing the market carries risk. In August 2025, Hayes sold ETH near $3,507 only to buy back nine days later at $4,252âcosting roughly 21% more to re-enter.
