Altcoin Fever Cools Down: What Needs to Happen Next?

A Quick Breather for Altcoin Traders
Remember how busy altcoin trading felt back in late September? Things have calmed down quite a bit since then, bringing the market back to a much more peaceful baseline. Total crypto spot trading volume is now running at about 3 times Bitcoin's (BTCBTC+0.19%) volume, down from nearly 4 times during the peak in late September. This cooling speculation leaves the market balanced between Bitcoin and altcoins, while EthereumETH+0.13% and altcoin holders wait for a clearer signal.
Altcoin Trading Activity Returns to Average Levels
AntiFragile, a lead analyst at Glassnode, tracks market activity by comparing total spot trading volume against Bitcoin's spot volume over a 7-day period. When this ratio climbs higher, it signals that traders are shifting more focus toward altcoins relative to Bitcoin. Back in late September, this ratio approached 4x as Blockchaincenter's Altcoin Season Index climbed to about 63. The ratio has since slipped back to 3x, which represents its median level since 2022. AntiFragile noted that for traders looking at altcoins, this quieter environment presents a much calmer backdrop than the overheated conditions seen a month ago.
Market breadth has also weakened noticeably. By October 18, about 48.4% of altcoins listed on Binance were trading below their 200-day moving average. That is a significant change from earlier in the month when under 10% were below that long-term trendline.
Bitcoin Dominance Holds the Key
Whether this quieter market eventually sparks fresh altcoin buying depends heavily on Bitcoin dominance. This metric tracks Bitcoin's share of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. On October 27, Bitcoin dominance registered at 60.49%, slightly below the peak of 60.91% recorded on October 18, which was the highest level seen since mid-May.
Looking back at previous market cycles, the last time dominance pulled back from this range, altcoins gained traction. Between mid-May and early June, dominance dropped to around 58%, while the Altcoin Season Index rose from roughly 25 to 50 during those same weeks. Past performance of digital assets is not a guarantee of future results.
Two Key Levels Analysts Are Watching
Cryptocurrency analyst Ash Crypto outlined two primary threshold levels on the Bitcoin dominance chart that could dictate where capital flows next:
- Break above 61.5%: A rise beyond this point would keep Bitcoin in the lead while altcoins remain relatively weak.
- Drop below 58%: A decline under this level could trigger capital rotation into Ethereum (ETH) and alternative tokens.
Ash Crypto added that while ETH has performed well over the past 4 months, that momentum requires Bitcoin dominance to fall below 61% to remain sustainable. Meanwhile, technical analyst More Crypto Online noted that a potential triangle pattern is unfolding on the dominance chart, with wave (c) approaching a key trendline.
Stablecoin Reserves: Less Liquid Cash on Exchanges
Currently, the Altcoin Season Index stands at a neutral reading of 51, placing it right midway between Bitcoin season (25) and altcoin season (75). However, one factor could slow down any potential rotation: ready liquidity on exchanges.
On October 26, exchange reserves of ERC-20 stablecoins stood at $55.97 billion, down from nearly $78 billion in November 2025. Because traders typically fund new crypto purchases using stablecoins already stored on exchanges, a smaller reserve pool means less immediate cash is deployed in the market.
With Bitcoin dominance sitting roughly 1 percentage point below upper resistance and 2.5 points above lower support, the next decisive breakout direction will help clarify whether buyers are ready to step back into altcoins.
