3 Canadian Soldiers Arrested in Violent Crypto Kidnapping

A Violent Crypto Ambush in Toronto
Police in Toronto have arrested seven individuals involved in a violent plot to kidnap a local resident and steal his digital assets. Among those arrested are three serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
The military members involved in the alleged scheme have been identified as Talarambage Fernando, James Moreau, and Jack Miley. Police say they worked alongside four other accomplices to execute the planned abduction.
The incident took place back in July when the group targeted an unnamed victim as he walked toward his vehicle. The attackers ambushed him at gunpoint, placed him in handcuffs, and forced him into captivity.
Targeting Assets and Business Systems
Once the victim was restrained, the group attempted to gain full control over his cryptocurrency holdings. They also demanded access to his business-related security systems.
After holding the victim against his will, the attackers eventually let him go. However, before releasing him, they warned him strictly not to contact law enforcement authorities.
Despite the threats, the case was reported, prompting a major investigation by local authorities to identify and track down the perpetrators.
Stolen Military Weapons and Expanding Charges
What began as a cryptojacking and kidnapping investigation quickly escalated into a much larger law enforcement operation. Police uncovered significant stockpiles of weapons, stolen military hardware, and illegal drugs.
During their search, officers seized almost 2,500 rounds of live ammunition along with five over-capacity magazines. Investigators believe this military gear was stolen directly from the Canadian Armed Forces arsenal.
"When you are dealing with people who have a degree of training as we do with members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are prepared to engage in what is alleged here, taking somebody off the street by force, that is incredibly concerning," stated Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw.
Chief Superintendent Joe Matthews explained that the scope of the probe expanded rapidly as officers discovered broader criminal activities linked to the group.
"Criminals continue to adapt their methods and identify new opportunities for financial gain. In this case, the victim was allegedly targeted because of his access to cryptocurrency assets. Our responsibility is to adapt alongside those threats," Matthews declared.
Understanding 'Wrench Attacks' in the Digital Age
In the crypto community, this type of crime is often referred to as a wrench attack. Instead of writing complex computer code or hacking software passwords, criminals rely on real-world physical force, weapons, or threats to coerce victims into handing over their digital funds.
This case is far from an isolated incident. Physical attacks against crypto asset holders have seen a worrying surge across the globe in recent years.
- According to blockchain auditing firm Chainalysis, violent wrench attacks accounted for over $30 million in stolen crypto assets globally by August 2026.
- Attackers frequently focus on individuals known to hold substantial digital wealth or those with high-level administrative permissions.
- Criminals are increasingly combining digital surveillance with physical stalking to execute targeted ambushes.
For instance, in a separate high-profile incident in Pattaya, Thailand, an expatriate was held at gunpoint and restrained inside a home until he was forced to transfer $820,000 worth of cryptocurrency directly to his attackers.
Ongoing Investigations and Broader Implications
All seven suspects, including the three Canadian military personnel, are currently in police custody. However, law enforcement officials emphasized that their work is not finished.
Detectives are actively probing whether this group has ties to larger organized crime syndicates or was involved in other unsolved violent robberies across North America.
The involvement of active military members equipped with stolen defense supplies has raised serious concerns regarding internal security protocols within military facilities.
Key Takeaways for Asset Safety
As physical threats targeting digital wealth become more sophisticated, security experts strongly emphasize the importance of personal operational security (OpSec).
- Avoid publicly boasting about digital asset holdings or trading gains on social media platforms.
- Use multi-signature setups or time-locked cold storage solutions so funds cannot be immediately transferred under duress.
- Maintain strict physical privacy and remain vigilant in public spaces, especially when approaching personal vehicles or residences.
At the time of writing, major digital assets were trading with modest gains, with BitcoinBTC+1.39% around $81,994 (+1.32%) and EthereumETH+3.30% near $2,439 (+3.32%). Past performance of digital assets is not a guarantee of future returns.
