VivoPower Exits $5M Ripple Stake to Pivot Into AI

Have you ever wondered how large corporate investors manage their crypto holdings? It is not always a simple journey, and strategic priorities can shift rapidly when market dynamics change.
On November 2, 2026, British company VivoPower PLC filed its annual report with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The document confirmed that the company has officially wound down its corporate cryptocurrency strategy, liquidating a $5 million stake in private fintech firm RippleXRP+3.60% Labs.
From a $100 Million Plan to a Modest Purchase
Back in May 2025, VivoPower made headlines by announcing an ambitious crypto treasury expansion strategy. The company set a target investment goal of up to $100 million split between XRP tokens and Ripple Labs equity.
In practice, the actual capital deployed was far more modest than original estimates. In January 2026, the company spent $5.0 million to acquire 41,810 private shares of Ripple Labs. For institutional buyers, acquiring equity directly in Ripple was seen as a way to gain exposure to the growth of the broader ecosystem.
Why Shift Focus to Artificial Intelligence?
The crypto treasury initiative was short-lived, lasting only nine months from its initial public announcement. By February 2026, VivoPower's board of directors decided to fully exit the crypto space.
Company executives concluded that expanding into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure offered higher relative profitability than holding digital assets. Consequently, management redirected capital to acquire a 41.5 megawatt (MW) data center in Mo i Rana, Norway, for $37.7 million.
The $300 Buyback: How Ripple Values Its Shares
Liquidating private company shares is very different from trading tokens on a public exchange. Because Ripple Labs is a private entity, selling shares on an open order book is not an option.
In April 2026, Ripple Labs conducted a private buyback deal. The company purchased 882 shares back from VivoPower at a price of $300 per share. This trade provided VivoPower with $264,600 in cash and generated $159,122 in net profit.
This transaction offered market observers a rare metric showing how Ripple's management values its own private equity during internal transactions.
Lock-Ups and Korean Agreements
Selling the remainder of the stake required alternative structures due to the non-public status of the securities. VivoPower signed agreements to transfer the economic rights of the remaining shares to two South Korean partners: KWeather Co. and Lean Ventures.
As of the filing date, the deals with the Korean partners were not yet legally finalized. The remaining 40,928 shares are currently locked in the Korea Securities Depository (KSD) under a strict one-year lock-up period.
Because of this temporary freeze and the overall lack of market liquidity, independent appraisers adjusted the book value of the remaining stake down to $4.3 million, which translates to roughly $106.16 per share.
Key Lessons for Institutional Crypto Exposure
The VivoPower trajectory highlights critical structural realities regarding corporate holdings in non-public fintech companies:
- Limited Liquidity: Private shares cannot be immediately converted to cash on public markets.
- Dependence on Corporate Buybacks: Private buybacks by the issuer are often the most direct mechanism for early exits.
- Valuation Adjustments: Lock-up restrictions and secondary transfers often involve fair-value adjustments by professional appraisers.
