South Korea Probes Top Banks on Crypto Hack Risks

Bank of Korea Launches First Crypto Risk Survey
South Korea's central bank is taking a closer look at how digital assets might affect traditional finance. For the very first time, the Bank of Korea (BOK) has surveyed the nation's biggest commercial banks about their exposure to major crypto risks.
The central bank wants to understand how these large institutions would handle severe market stress. They are looking closely at how traditional financial players might react if digital asset markets experience a sudden crisis.
Key Scenarios Covered in the Survey
The BOK questionnaire presented several hypothetical crisis situations to measure potential fallout across the broader banking system. The central bank asked major banks to evaluate three key threat vectors:
- The direct financial impact of a major cryptocurrency hack on the bank
- The broad fallout from a sudden and severe crypto price crash
- Contagion risks caused by severe losses at another financial firm involved in crypto
Examining Internal Teams, Budgets, and Investments
Beyond testing hypothetical crisis scenarios, the survey focused on internal banking operations. The Bank of Korea asked for detailed information on how each bank structures its digital asset activities.
Specifically, the survey requested information about each firm's dedicated crypto teams, their assigned budgets, and their total active investments in the sector.
Why This Risk Assessment Matters
Financial regulators worldwide are monitoring the connections between traditional banking and the digital asset market. As crypto adoption grows, central banks want to prevent market shocks from spreading to traditional financial institutions.
This survey marks an important step for South Korea. By gathering precise data on bank investments and operational preparedness, regulators aim to safeguard overall financial stability.
