James Wynn Shorts Bitcoin Again Despite ETF Inflows

Post-Election Institutional ETF Inflows Turn Market Tides
On November 4, the very first trading session following the US midterm elections, institutional capital returned to US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with a net inflow of $74.57 million in a single day.
However, buying activity was unevenly distributed across funds. Fidelity's FBTC led the momentum by pulling in $237 million. In contrast, competing spot Bitcoin funds recorded combined net outflows of approximately $162 million on the same day, according to data from tracking platform SoSoValue.
This positive shift followed a day of notable withdrawals. On November 3, during the US midterm elections, spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced net outflows totaling $115.56 million.
The broader crypto ETF market also saw renewed interest. Spot EthereumETH+2.55% ETFs added $53.02 million in positive net inflows on November 4, effectively snapping a five-day streak of negative outflows.
Who Is James Wynn? From $100 Million to a $500 Account
While institutional investors pushed fresh capital into spot ETFs, individual trader James Wynn took the opposite side of the market by shorting Bitcoin.
Wynn trades publicly on HyperliquidHYPE-3.15%, an on-chain order book exchange where trader positions and performance figures are visible to the public.
Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence highlighted Wynn's trading history, noting that he was once worth nearly $100 million before losing his fortune through high-leverage trading. Platform metrics on Hyperliquid show his account previously peaked at roughly $84 million.
Hyperliquid data shows his overall historical trading record stands at an all-time net loss of approximately $22.08 million. In August, media reports noted that Wynn had suffered 22 consecutive short liquidations while trading S&P 500 perpetual futures.
How 40x Leverage and Liquidations Work
Wynn's trading strategy relies heavily on perpetual futures contracts, which allow traders to speculate on crypto price movements using borrowed leverage without an expiration date.
Using 40x leverage means that every $1 of personal collateral allows a trader to control $40 worth of Bitcoin. While high leverage increases exposure, it also makes positions sensitive to small price swings.
At 40x leverage, an adverse price movement of roughly 2.5% completely wipes out the collateral backing the trade. When this occurs, the exchange's automated system forcibly closes the trade in an event known as liquidation.
Three Short Liquidations in a Single Day
As Bitcoin's price recovered from an overnight dip on November 4, driven in part by spot ETF buying, Wynn's short positions were repeatedly liquidated.
Hyperliquid records reveal that three of his bearish positions were forcibly closed at rising price levels:
- First short liquidation: $78,244
- Second short liquidation: $79,361
- Third short liquidation: $80,677
These three automatic closures resulted in total losses of approximately $1,940 for his account across the session.
Rebuilding the Short Position at $80,430
Within 20 minutes of his third liquidation at $80,677, Wynn reopened a new short position near $80,430, maintaining his conviction that the market would fall.
Bitcoin is going a lot lower FYI.
Arkham Intelligence pointed out that shortly after opening the new trade, Wynn held an unrealized profit of $25. The parameters of his active position demonstrate the narrow margin for error remaining in his account:
- Account balance backing the trade: Approximately $486 (out of a $500 balance)
- Position size: Approximately 0.24 BTCBTC+1.21% (valued near $19,280)
- Liquidation price: Approximately $81,375
With his liquidation price set roughly 1.2% above his entry point, a minor price increase would lead to another complete liquidation of his remaining margin balance.
Market Outlook: Institutional ETF Inflows vs Short Pressure
Market direction over the coming sessions will largely depend on institutional spot ETF flows. If sustained ETF buying persists, upside price pressure could continue, placing additional stress on open short positions.
Conversely, if post-election institutional buying cools down and net ETF outflows resume, market momentum could shift downward, validating Wynn's target expectations.
